Internet Safety Tips by Macy Sluder
The internet is a very helpful place but it can also be very dangerous if you don't know the rules. Here are a few tips to make sure you stay safe on the internet.
* Always ask an adult before you create an account on a website.
* Never give out any personal information on the internet.
* Beware of cyberbullies and always tell a trusted adult if anyone is bullying you online.
* Make sure you don't become a cyberbully: never say something to someone online that you wouldn't say to them when talking to them face to face.
* Remember, not everyone is who they claim to be on the internet.
What Is The Question To My Answer? By: Callie Scroggins
Science Fair 2015 by Nives Myers
It's Science Fair time again and Ms. Jacqueline Smith, 5th Grade Science Teacher, is busy preparing to host this year's school science fair! The science fair consists of interested 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students who will compete in a variety of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics related subjects. The Mill Creek Elementary School Science Fair will take place on February 10th, 2015 in the school cafeteria. The top two 5th & 6th grade projects from each category will be eligible to compete at the North Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair to be held at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), March 10-12, 2015.
During my interview with Ms. Smith, I learned that the participants have really been working hard this year and that she has been meeting with several of the students to assist them with their projects. Ms. Smith dedicates a lot of time and energy coordinating the science fair and assisting participants. Generally, she helps guide the students on picking out a topic and submitting their pariticipant applications. I asked her if there was anything different about this year's fair from previous ones and she stated that physical sciences is usually the most popular category but this year she is seeing a lot more projects related to human behavior. Below are some additional questions from my discussion with her:
Q: "What do you think the purpose of our fair is?"
A: "To see the kids excited to learn more about science."
Q: "What is your favorite part of the science fair?"
A: "Getting to see all of the creative ideas that I would never come up with!"
Q: "Do you have any encouraging words for the contestants?"
A: "Just enjoy learning about something you are personally interested in."
Competitors who advance to the North Alabama Regional Fair and do well could advance to the Alabama State Science and Engineering Fair in April and even the International Science and Engineering Fair in May. I'm sure all of our students participating in the fair are very excited and can't wait to demonstrate how much they have learned about their chosen topic. Good luck future scientists!
The New Principal By: Callie Scroggins
Some of y'all may have already had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Bucanan, our new principal. I have asked her a couple questions, and hope this will help you get to know her a little bit better. The questions and answers are below.
1. Where are you from? I am from Hazel Green, AL
2. What is your favorite hobby? I really enjoy watching football, quilting, and reading.
3. Why did you become a principal? I became a principal because I wanted to make a difference in the lives of teachers and students. I love learning and I want to bring out that love for learning in others.
4. Do you have any children? if so, how old are they? I have two wonderful boys. Taylor is a junior at James Clemens and Braylon is a first grader at MCES.
5. What did you do before coming to Mill Creek? I worked at Liberty Middle School for 20 years... 17 as a teacher, 2 as an Instructional Partner, and 1 as an assistant principal. I spent 1 year at James Clemens as an assistant principal. This year I worked at the Central Office as the Coordinator of Instructional Technology before coming to MCES.
6. What is your favorite movie? The Blind Side, Remember the Titans, and Steel Magnolias
7. What is your favorite book? I really do not have a favorite... I read all types of books from all genres.... But, if I have to choose one it would be... You know what... I cannot pick. Books are so different and love the ones I have read for different reasons.
8. Are you an Auburn or Alabama fan? War Eagle!!!!
9. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? Hawaii!!!! I love beaches and gorgeous flowers.
