Car Seat and Seat Belt Safety Tips
- Safety seats must meet federal safety standards and be installed properly to prevent injuries.
- Read the manufacturer's instructions and the motor vehicle owner's manual to ensure the safety seat is being used correctly. Follow instructions carefully.
- Check the instruction manual for the weight and height restrictions for each child safety seat.
- Children under age 13 should ride in the rear seat.
Common Child Passenger Safety Mistakes
- Turning a child from a rear-facing safety seat to a forward-facing safety seat too soon.
- Safety seat is not secured tight enough -- should not shift more than one inch side-to-side or out from the seat
- Harness on the child is not tight enough -- if you can pinch harness material, it's too loose
- Retainer clip is up too high or too low -- should be at the child's armpit level
- The child is in the wrong safety seat -- don't rush your child into a seat belt

All volunteers in the Mounds View School District are required to complete a background check at your student's school before volunteering. If you are interested in volunteering at Pike Lake please click here to print a background check form. Pike Lake conducts a background check each year on each volunteer; if you have a check on file with another school or have previously had a background check at Pike Lake we ask that you please fill one out again for this year. Volunteers are required to familiarize themselves with Policy EG-3104.
Celebration or Birthday Treats
In order to help promote all students' health as well as providing a safe environment for our students with food sensitivities, all elementary and Kindergarten centers have guidelines for celebrations.
If you wish to bring something to share with classmates for a birthday or other special event please limit it to a non-food item. Donation examples include, but are not limited to: student's favorite book to the class collection, have a special 'guest reader' read a book to the class, stickers, pencils, pens, markers, erasers, a board game to the class for indoor recess, etc. Your child's teacher will also help recognize your child's special day.
