KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION BEGINS THIS MONTH
Will your child be 5 years old by August 31?
On March 6, you can complete your child’s online enrollment for kindergarten. An easy and quick process as detailed in the step-by-step parent walkthrough video available in multiple languages on our website www.everettsd.org/kindergartenenrollment. You can also enroll inperson at your neighborhood school.
Enrolling early in March will ensure invitations to your school’s kindergarten events and participation in Everett Ready, a transition-into-kindergarten program offered for one week in August to all enrolled kindergarteners. We are looking forward to welcoming you and your student to kindergarten!
News from the Art Studio - Mrs. Taylor
Kindergarten and First Grade students have been learning about primary and secondary colors. Students have enjoyed mixing primary colors to make secondary colors using both model magic and water color paint. They are creating their very own color wheel on paper and coloring it with markers. Second Grade Students are learning about the artist, Jen Stark. They are making cool “dripping” art pieces that will be arranged together to form a cool mural that we will put in and around the art studio. Second graders are also creating some beautiful sea creature art in preparation for the music concert!
Art Club News: Art clubs are for third, fourth and fifth grade students. We meet during lunch and recess. Art club students have been busy creating posters to highlight the trait of the month: Friendship. Fourth and Fifth grade students have had the option to create a sculpture from wire. Art club students have learned the technique of using a grid to recreate an image and also to enlarge an image. Third, Fourth and Fifth Grade students are learning about Surrealism during our whole grade level art workshops in the cafeteria! Students learn a little information about Surrealism. Then they are creating their own Surrealist art work by drawing a large eye filled with images that they design.
Other Art News: Mrs. Taylor received a grant from the Everett Public Schools Foundation to purchase clay and supplies so that students can have an opportunity to work with pottery! We are excited to learn about clay and use a kiln!!! Thank you for this wonderful gift Everett Public Schools Foundation!! WE are so excited to get our hands in CLAY! We also received gifts of multicultural art supplies from Color Me Important! We love using the skin toned markers and crayons when we draw ourselves!! Thank you Color Me Important!
Art Studio Volunteers Needed: If you would like to volunteer in the art studio, let Mrs. Taylor know! She would love parent helpers! Men’s shirts for SMOCKS: We are looking for donations of men’s dress shirts. We will be using these button up long sleeve shirts as smocks. Children can wear the shirt backwards when painting or working with clay to protect their clothing! If you have any long sleeve, button-up men’s shirts that you would like to donate, please send them to school with a note that they are for the art studio! Thank you!!! I love working with your amazing young artists each day!!! If you have any Questions about the Art Studio : Please feel free to send me an email! Mrs. Taylor~ btaylor@everettsd.org
News from the Health Room
March is Brain Injury Awareness Month.
Why is this important? Brain injury is more common than you may think, and there are now new requirements in WA state for reporting concussions in all public schools. Did you know? Being struck by another person or object is the LEADING CAUSE of unintentional injury for teens and young adults ages 15 – 24, according to Injury Facts, and sports-related concussions are a significant contributor.
As a school nurse, I can tell you we see a LOT of head bumps/injuries come through the health room. And while most of these will not result in a concussion, it is possible . . . and something we take very seriously.
- Below you’ll find the CDC’s Concussion Parent Athlete Info Sheet (in English and Spanish) that provides helpful information to educate yourself for the warning signs of concussion and/or if your child has received a concussion diagnosis.
- Both potential and verified concussions should be taken seriously. Verified concussions will require medical attention. If a student suffers a head injury, the student should be evaluated for the following signs/symptoms:
- Confusion/cannot recall events prior to or after hit/fal, Forgetfulness, Glassy eyes, Poor balance/clumsiness, Disorientation, Slowed speech, Changes in mood, behavior or personality, Headache or “pressure” in the head, Nausea or vomiting, Dizziness/blurry or double vision, Light and/or noise sensitivity, Feeling groggy, sluggish, Not feeling “right”, Confusion
Please note: There are new requirements for student concussion reporting for Washington state. Please alert the building nurse if your child/student is diagnosed with a concussion by a medical professional.
