Spotlight on Madison County Schools
Mentoring Program
Trojan Sparks students meet with their “mentee” each week. Our students really enjoy the older students spending time and teaching them. The high school kids like their time with the younger kids just as much.
This is Halloween at Hazel Green!
Even fun dress up days can be teachable moments. Our entire school dressed up for Halloween, but fourth graders dressed up as Idioms!
Even our “QUeen Bees”and “SMarty Pants” “wore their hearts on their sleeves” and joined in the fun.
House of Troy’s Trail or Treat
No tricks, only treats! The House of Troy coordinated a Trail or Treat around the school so that all of our students had the opportunity to get treats at 9 different stations.
Harvest Hoedown
Our PTO and teachers hosted the HGES Harvest Hoedown on November 2nd. Kids could play games, go to the petting zoo, go on a hayride, while adults could play bingo to win gift baskets provided by the different grade levels. A good time was had by all that attended.
Second Grade STEM
Mrs. Stanley’s class made pumpkin catapults and tested to see the distance of each one. Mrs. Appel’s class tested different types of candy to see which ones would float or sink. Halloween is not just full of candy - it’s also full of science!
Leaving Their Mark!

Post-Mortem Protagonist Project
Mrs. Hickman’s eighth graders recently worked on a Post-Mortem Protagonist project and a “cold case” surrounding “The Tell-Tale Heart.” For the Post-Mortem Protagonist project, in small groups, students found quotes that relate to body parts that represent various qualities of the narrator. Then they traced the outline of a body and wrote the quotes on the body to show understanding of how textual evidence can support ideas and details of the text.
The Tell-Tale Heart "Cold Case" Breakout Edu is like an escape room. Students had various activities to complete in order to figure out the codes for each lock. Students had five activities: a quiz, identification of figurative language, a puzzle to show the importance of diction, a punctuation quiz, and a riddle. Students had to use deductive reasoning analyzing how specific word choices shape the meaning of a text. Students, also, had to learn how to work together in order to figure out the codes for each lock and "breakout". This was difficult, but the students enjoyed the challenge.

Students detect inherited forms of Cancer using Electrophoresis:
Cayde Prince (pictured) is assuming she is a genetic counselor working in a clinic. It is her job to advise patients of their risk for inherited disorders based upon family history or clinical findings and to explain the nature of the disorder and risks to other family members. She is working with an individual who has a family history of colon cancer known as HNPCC. Cayde also played the role of a lab technician in using DNA related diagnostic test, Electrophoresis, to identify which members of this family have inherited the cancer-causing mutation.
Unfortunately, Cayde has to tell Bob (patient) that he has the inherited form of colon cancer due to her findings. It her job now to inform Bob that there is an 80% chance for him to develop cancer and ways to change his lifestyle in order to help prevent the cancer from developing. She also helps with advising the patient about treatment options if the cancer does appear
