The Classroom Connection

Mrs. Jefferson & Mrs. Nesbit

Welcome to 5th Grade!

We are having a wonderful first week of school! We've been busy spending time getting to know each other, practicing old and new routines, and getting back into the swing of things! Thank you for sending us such a super group of students! Here are a few photos from this week and check your emails real soon for a slideshow about the first week of school.

Literacy & Social Studies with Mrs. Jefferson

Next week, we will begin our study of Reconstruction. This is the rebuilding of America after the Civil War. Please check your child's US History composition notebook to see the notes they'll take in class. It is critical that your child studies and discusses the content they learn in social studies on a daily basis.

To support our study of this time in US History, we will read the novel, Shades of Gray by Carolyn Reeder. This novel takes place immediately after the Civil War, and it explores the many dilemmas our country faced during Reconstruction. While reading this novel, we’ll explore how to become better readers as we use explicit evidence from the text to examine unknown words and make inferences.

We'll begin our writing unit with a focus on storytelling. In order to have a strong written story, it must first be told. On Monday, please allow your child to bring in three artifacts (pictures or items small enough to fit in their book bags). They will use these artifacts to give them inspiration for future writings.

Math & Science with Mrs. Nesbit

I'm sure many of you will notice that math is different this year. We have adopted a new math curriculum and textbook that we believe will be a great fit for us. I look forward to assisting your child as they review and strengthen their skills. Our class will be sharpening our knowledge and application of fractions and decimals, next week. In science, your child will begin their study and exploration of landforms. This will include investigating maps and models.

5th Grade T-Shirts

Fifth grade t-shirts can be purchased for $13 until September 3rd. We will wear them for Spirit Fridays, pep rallies, field trips, and Field Day. Please consider purchasing this cool, tie dyed shirt for your child! The order forms were in your child's VIP Folder on the first day of school.
