Boone School Family Newsletter
January 2015 Online Edition
Principal's Message
Dear Families and Friends of Boone School,
The past several weeks have been action-packed with lots of events and announcements. As you hopefully have heard, we are pleased to announce that CPS school ratings have finally been released, and Boone has received the highest rating of “1+” per the School Quality Rating Policy (SQRP). This rating largely recognizes the tremendous amount of growth that our students made in reading and math scores last year on the NWEA MAP test. With more hard work and perseverance the rest of this year, we will continue to grow!
I am also excited to announce that Boone has been selected as one of eight schools in CPS to receive the Creative Schools Grant for $15,000. This grant will involve our 7th and 8th grade elective students in a project titled, “Pieces of Me,” which will focus on using Media Arts as a method of expression and documentation of arts learning. We look forward to seeing the project develop.
Thank you all for a great 2014, and here’s to a Happy New Year in 2015!
Sincerely,
Jackie Delaney, Principal
Benefits of Outdoor Recess in Winter
We have recently heard some concerns in regards to outdoor recess. CPS policy encourages schools to send students outside for recess as long as the temperature is at least 15 degrees Fahrenheit. At Boone we use a slightly warmer benchmark and send students outside to recess if the temperature is a minimum of 20 degrees Fahrenheit. The following is some additional information from Playworks pertaining to cold weather recess:
"It’s a myth that you can catch a cold from being out in the cold air for too long. Instead, it may in fact be staying inside during cold weather that spreads the flu and colds. So to prevent sickness this winter, bundle up and get outside. There are probably fewer germs outdoors and you will get needed exercise to support your immune system." - See more at the Playworks website
