February Celebration: What's Happening at Athey this Month
With the buzz of winter break and a new year behind us, we are excited about our February celebrations and continued learning opportunities. Throughout the month, students will be recognizing Black History Month within each of our classes through our embedded curriculum, recognizing our rich and diverse heritage communities, as well as specific activities. In the Performing Arts, choir students have studied Spirituals and the historical and musical significance that they have had in our country, stemming from the urge to escape slavery through the Underground Railroad and how it has influenced all of our music today. Later this week, Athey will be hosting their annual Jazz Festival celebrating Black Musicians and their impact during the Harlem Renaissance. Black History Month is also carried over into our fine arts classes, as students are studying artists such as Jacob Lawrence and Romare Bearden and applying their techniques. Other classes are studying the historical contributions in the areas of science and literary texts such as "Warriors Don't Cry", "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" and "Piecing Me Together" which allow for deeper learning. Ask your child to hear more about their activities and learning this month, as February is the month of love and kindness.

SHOWING KINDNESS THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY!
Last year, February was Kindness month and the PTSA wants to continue this annual celebration. The Kindness bars will be on sale at the student store starting later this week for $1 each.
We have over a 1000 bars to show kindness. The kids can write their name on the bar to another person to show kindness. Once these bars are gone, they are gone until next year.
In addition, the PTSA will be giving each of the advisory groups $50 to use as a way to show kindness & gratitude. Each class will have the opportunity to research what does bringing kindness & gratitude mean and how that class can they show that. An example could be writing to a company to let them them know how much you enjoy / appreciate their product (Honeynut Cheerios), or making a donation to a cause that helps lots of people or animals. The idea is to get creative and learn several ways to show kindness & gratitude.

District, First Student Bus Company Launch FirstView Bus Tracking App
In partnership with First Student, the district is launching FirstView, a bus tracking, and parent communication app for your smartphone or desktop. The app can provide additional information for parents and students, including the general location and direction of individual buses as well as timestamps for school arrivals and departures.
The app also allows students and parents to set up push or email notifications that alert when a bus close. While the district is launching this app, please understand that it is a new system for the district and for First Student. It uses sophisticated technology that depends on many components to function. Parent feedback is helpful as First Student continues to fine-tune and improve this resource.
To learn more about the FirstView App, including how to download and use this resource, please visit the district website.
