Teachable moments arise throughout the school day as opportunities to introduce and practice social and emotional learning skills. Setting goals helps students focus on what is most important to them and can boost their confidence in accomplishing what they want in life.
Here are some ways to help students develop their goal setting skills.
• Display the S.M.A.R.T. Goals Student Resource in the classroom to encourage students to set goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time bound.
• Model setting S.M.A.R.T. goals throughout the year for various assignment and projects. Demonstrate how the goal can be broken down into steps.
• When working towards a goal, encourage students to use the Work the Plan Student Resource to practice the strategies for adjusting the plan to reach a goal.
• Celebrate the effort students apply towards their goals as much as the end result. Invite students to reflect on what went well and possibilities for the future.
• Determine a class goal together and make a plan to reach the goal. Check in with the class periodically and reflect on whether the plan needs to be adjusted. • Encourage students to view setbacks towards their goals as opportunities to learn and adjust their plans.

Strategies for RESTORATIVE and COMMUNITY Circles
Using restorative practices in the classroom encourages prosocial behavior and decreases the likelihood that the incident will happen again, supporting the creation of a safe and caring classroom community.
Attached you will find strategies to integrate Restorative Practices during your SEL lesson and classroom lessons.
Create a Safe and Caring Classroom
Setting students up for success is key to implementing restorative practices effectively. Creating a safe and caring classroom provides a space where all students feel valued and are willing to view mistakes as a process of learning, both academically and socially.
• Develop community agreements as a class and post them clearly.
• Plan community building activities throughout the school year.
• Integrate Community Circles as a regular part of your classroom culture.
• Discuss the purpose and principles of restorative practices with students.
• Include students in decision-making when appropriate.
• Consider students’ age and cognitive development when setting behavioral expectations.
• Provide opportunities for students to share their experiences, values, and cultures.
• Connect academically and personally with each student daily. • Use and encourage inclusive and strength-based language.
• Develop positive relationships with students and their families. • Investigate your own cultural frame of reference.
• Explicitly teach the SEL skills necessary for effective restorative practice
