Mrs. Greene's 3rd Grade
January 24, 2020
Happy Friday!
The MAP Reading test is complete. You will receive your child's scores in a few weeks. We will finish MAP Math test on Monday, January 27. I always look forward to reading the NWEA report to see all of your child's hard work come to fruition. Thank you for all of your efforts at home to help your child with any school related activities and homework. We are all in this together!
We ended our day with a convocation about DIVERSITY. It was a fun celebration of how we are all different and how we should celebrate our differences. We did a lot of singing, dancing, and smiling!
That's all I have for now...

Amazing Things I Saw and Heard in Room 9...
Sophie: When we stopped writing to go to lunch today, she was VERY disappointed. She was so into her writing that she wanted to keep going! YAY!
Ady: Received several compliments from Room 9 students about her hard work ethic, excellent behavior, and positive attitude toward learning.
Alex: This is a boy who is always willing to pitch in a helping hand whenever someone needs something!
Brandt: There have been a lot of students walking on the ice at recess. The teachers are constantly blowing our whistles asking students to get off the ice. During our BUSINESS ITEMS discussion during Community Circle, Brant wanted to address this issue. We had a wonderful discussion about it!
Kendall: Kendall worked harder this week than I have seen her work all year! She made some great gains and was all smiles about her accomplishments!
Gabby: Received several compliments about her work ethic and great behavior during Community Circle. She was very humble about her many compliments.
WOW!!! I realize I have several more good news items to share, so --- I'll wait and share them next week!
January 27-31
Reading:
- We took an assessment where the students read a long text passage (narrative) and responded to four questions in written form. I will grade them over the weekend, hand them back to your child, then he/she will assess their work. We will create reading goals based upon the response to each question. The skills that we are really digging into right now are:
- Inferring - character traits (noticing what characters say and do to help understand who they really are)
- Character Change - characters are rarely stagnant from the beginning to the end of the story. They usually change. What patterns do we see in characters?
- Story Elements - Climbing the story mountain (characters, setting, problem/solution, resolution)
- Determining Theme - what message or lesson can be learned from a story?
Math: Unit 5 -Fractions and Multiplication Strategies
- Finding Missing Factors
- Equivalent Fractions
- Depending upon how well the students have grasped the lessons next week, we might test over Unit 5 next Friday, January 31.
Writing: Persuasive - Opinion
- Students read an article today about people owning wild animals as pets and the negative effects of doing that. They used the information from the article to write an opinion piece stating whether they think the ring-tailed lemur would make a good pet. They did not finish, so we will continue working on them next week. I will grade them and send them home when I finish.
Word Study - Grammar
- Morphology - prefixes, suffixes, roots
- We continue to practice spelling high-frequency words
- Verbs
Science: Scientific Method (We are a little behind in Science)
