PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
What an amazing month! I feel like winter break is a distant memory. The snow days and changes in schedule have made for routine setting challenging. It is a credit to our students how they have performed well and bring their best to school each day.
Our students continue to outperform expectations in their academic achievements. Students have been taking reading and math assessments that are helping us guide instruction in the classroom. Our teachers work with the specialists and interventionists to make sure we are able to support grade level achievement. We continue to utilize CORE time in order to enrich our students' learning opportunities, presentation skills and self esteem.
February is a short month, but we are still packing in a lot of experiences for our students. We have our family dance on February 15th. This is a great time for families to connect and enjoy music and fun. Our kindergarten and first graders will have a chance to learn about dental care this month. Our month will wrap up with a Saturday Wolfpack game in which our Thalberg advanced band will be playing for the audience. I love when Thalberg students show their talents to those beyond our community.
This month is a time in which we look to give back to our community. We are hosting our annual "Souper Bowl" can drive to fill the shelves of the food pantries. Our Grade 4 students, with the help of the Orchard Valley Garden Club, will make floral arrangements for the patients at Southington Care. The staff will be holding dress down days in order to support Bread for Life and other community causes. We will be sharing some of these adult fundraisers with the students so they are aware that Thalberg's caring community happens at all ages.
March will be here before you know it. Our marking period closes on March 9th. I know our students will continue to work hard in their studies! I am so proud of all of their efforts. They truly show that "When you do good things, you get good things".
Respectfully,
Megan Bennett

Valentine's Day Card Reminder
Many people equate February with Valentine’s Day. Teachers will be contacting parents regarding Valentine’s Day celebrations in the classroom. More information will be made available from your classroom teachers and room parents shortly.
If your child is planning on sharing Valentine’s Day cards, we ask the following two guidelines be followed:
- · A card must be made for all students in the classroom.
- · There can be NO FOOD/CANDY passed out with Valentine’s cards.
- · Any candy that is brought in for distribution will be held in the main office.
I appreciate your understanding and adherence to the guidelines provided above. We recognize the number of allergies and food sensitivities within our school. The guidelines are created to ensure the health and safety for all students.

CDC: Preventing the Flu: Good Health Habits Can Help Stop Germs
The single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year, but good health habits like covering your cough and washing your hands often can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like the flu. There also are flu antiviral drugs that can be used to treat and prevent flu.
1. Avoid close contact.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
2. Stay home when you are sick.
If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. This will help prevent spreading your illness to others.
3. Cover your mouth and nose.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.
4. Clean your hands.
Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
6. Practice other good health habits.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food. CDC 2016

What is Fifth Disease?
Fifth Disease is usually a mild illness that is spread by respiratory secretions. It is a viral illness caused by parvovirus (B-19) that mostly occurs in children and is known for a typical rash that resembles “slapped-cheeks.” The rash may spread to other parts of the body as well. Other cold-like symptoms may be observed before the rash breakout including low-grade fever, mild headache, joint pain, or fatigue. Once the rash appears, the child is most likely no longer contagious.
Fact sheets from the State of Connecticut DPH and the CDC can be found in the links below which include information about cause, transmission, and course of the illness as well as adult exposure during pregnancy. Anyone who may be pregnant, immunocompromised or has a blood disorder should contact his or her physician for medical advice.
If you have any concerns about the exposure or health risk to you or your child, please contact your physician for advice.

4th Grade Letters to Active Military Men and Women
The students then received pictures of the soldiers reading their letters all the way from Poland! Some pictures even showed the soldiers "dabbing" while reading the letters. The letters from Thalberg students were shared across the battalion and the Air Cav also got involved. This heartwarming message was passed on to the students; "Nothing puts a smile on our faces like a letter from a child." The students are anxiously awaiting letters in return. Thank you Thalberg students for making a difference in the lives of these soldiers.
