Message from the Principal
It's hard to believe it's the last week of school. Well, we have a lot of exciting things planned for each day. We will be spending quite a bit of time outside. Therefore, we encourage students to put on sunscreen at home and bring a hat. Also, students should remember to bring a large water bottle, with their names on them. Please remind your children that they can use the refilling station next to the restrooms if they run out of water.
Also, please stop by the lost and found cart next to the multipurpose room sometime this week to find jackets, water bottles, and other belongings that your child may have left at school during the year.
The last day of school is on Friday. All students will be dismissed at 12:15. Please inform the caregiver responsible for picking up your child about the earlier dismissal time.
Thank you for all of your support!
Let's have a great week!
Mary Katayama
Principal

Carlton's Math Club
This year, parent volunteers coordinated and instructed Carlton's Math Club. Ninety 4th and 5th grade students signed up for the program, and all were allowed to participate as space became available (team max of 70). Sixty-five students completed the program as part of two Math Olympiads teams.
The Math Club met weekly after school in the cafeteria and media center from October to March. Each week the volunteers introduced a new math topic. Some example topics were: common factors, divisibility, perimeter, averages, and algebra. Our students also prepared for and participated in five Math Olympiads contests throughout the year. While top scores were not our only focus, our students and teams performed well.
- Both teams scored in the top 20% of elementary schools
- Both were also recognized for being in the top 20% of 5th grade teams. Each team was a mix of 4th & 5th graders.
- Ten students scored in the top 10% of participants (19+ points out of 25).
- Forty-six students scored in the top 50% of participants (10+ points out of 25).
- Over the course of the year, average student contest scores improved by over 20% (comparing first and last contest scores).
- Scoring a 4 or 5 in a contest is quite difficult. For the first contest, only eight students scored a 4. For our final contest, over 20 students achieved a 4 or 5!
Ways to Continue Learning Over the Summer
As we finish this school year, many parents may be wondering how to help their children to continue learning at home. Here are some ways to keep students engaged in summer reading, writing, and math activities. Memorizing math facts by using playing cards is a great summer challenge. All children benefit from reading with an adult each day. You can take turns reading, listen to your child read, or listen to a story together. Then discuss parts of the story or ask questions of each other as if you are in a book club.
