Sibley County 4-H Newsletter
June 2022
Fairy Entry
There was a packet mailed in Mid-May with instructions for Fair Entry. Fair Entry is the program that 4-H uses to create entries of the projects you are bringing to the fair. All entries need to be completed by Thursday, June 30 at 11:59 p.m. This is a strict deadline. If you miss this deadline, you will not be eligible for State Fair, the Ribbon Auction, and can’t receive any better than a blue. If you have any questions about this process, please contact the Sibley County Extension office at 507-237-4100.
LQA&E Policy
All County Fair 4-H livestock exhibitors in beef, dairy, sheep, swine, poultry, rabbits, meat and dairy goat and lama must have completed a Livestock Quality Assurance and Ethics Workshop. Certification is good for three Fair seasons. The level of training required is determined by the member’s grade at the time of training.
Sibley County is offering a LQA & E Training on Thursday, June 9, at the Nicollet County Fairgrounds in St. Peter from 5:30 – 9:00 p.m. Level I and Level II Training will be offered. Please go to 4HOnline to register by June 6.
Food Show, Demonstration Day, Clothing and Quilting Judging
The Clothing and Quilting Judging Day along with Demonstration Day and Food Show will ALL be held on Monday, July 18 at Sibley East High School in Arlington. We will be starting at 9:00 a.m. with Demonstration Day and Food Show. Clothing Day will be starting around Noon. We will be judging Fashion Review, Construction (constructed, purchased and non-clothing items) and Quilts. A public revue will be at 7:00 p.m. Watch for more details in a letter that will be sent to all clothing members in a few weeks.
Food Stand Shift Sign Up
Once again this year there will be a few changes to the 4-H Foodstand. We will be shortening up the menu and redoing the shift times and amount of people we need for each shift. However, we will still be using online sign up for Food Stand Shifts. ALL YOUTH WILL BE REQUIRED TO WORK AT LEAST ONE SHIFT (but feel free to sign up for more). We will also need LOTS OF ADULTS to sign up. This will be on a first come first serve basis, so in order to get your preferred time and job sign up early. Look for more information (via email) in the upcoming weeks on how to sign up. Please contact our office with any questions or if you do not have access to a computer and we can get you signed up for a shift.
Ribbon Auction
There was a packet mailed in Mid-May with details of the changes that were made to the documents for the Ribbon Auction this year. The deadline to turn in your Potential Bidder form with signatures is June 30. If you do not have form turned in by this deadline, you will not be able to participate in the ribbon auction. Before the county fair, you are going to want to take a picture of you and your project. If you have multiple options that you may be interested in selling at the ribbon auction, I would suggest taking a picture with each option. During the county fair, you will turn in the Auction Sign Up form stating which ribbon you would like to sell with a picture of that project you took before the fair. (This picture could be a hard copy or emailed to Connie or Joleen.) Please reach out to the extension office if you have any questions.
Dog Project Update
The dog project will have practices on Thursday nights starting at 6:30at the county fairgrounds. The Extension Office must have a copy of your COMPLETED Dog ID form on file before you can participate in any practices. The 2022 Dog Show date will be Saturday, July 23 at the Sibley County Fairgrounds in Arlington. Watch for more information in your emails and newsletters.
Horse Project Update
Games practices will start on Monday, June 6 and Pleasure/Drill team practices will begin on Wednesday , June 8. Make sure to get a current Coggin's to the Extension Office if you didn’t get it uploaded with your animal ID in 4-H online. A Coggin's is required before you can participate in any practices.
SSW Update
Archery practice will be held on Sunday evenings from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Practice for Air Pistol/Riffle, BB gun, and .22 loading will be held on Tuesday nights from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Shotgun/Trap practice will begin on June 28 from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Remember you need 8 hours in wildlife to compete at the state shoot in September. We will be meeting at Fredin Acres west of Arlington on June 1 at 6:00 p.m to count toward your wildlife hours.
Reminder of the Grooming and Fitting Policy
All grooming of livestock at the fair, including clipping, trimming and manipulation of the hair/wool (such as blocking on sheep, pulling up hair on beef and working up top lines on dairy) must be clearly done by the exhibitor, members of the immediate family or a livestock resource chosen by the 4-H family. Immediate family members are defined as being parents, step parents, legal guardians, grandparents, brothers or sisters. A livestock resource is defined as someone who is working with the 4-Her/4-H family to help them learn management and fitting and grooming skills in their project area. A livestock resource identified person would be allowed to work with the 4-Her and their family during the fitting and grooming process to guide and teach these skills. The 4-Her exhibiting the animal should be present and involved in the fitting process at the county fair. The livestock resource person can be used by 4-Hers that are not yet State Fair age eligible and also by first and second year project members.
Llama/Alpaca Project Meeting
The Sibley will be hosting a Llama/Alpaca Project meeting in mid June at Andy Cohr's farm. Brent Winslow from Chatfield, MN will be coming to shear, teeth trimming and hoof trimming. He is a hands-on teacher and has the kids helping while shearing. If you are interested in attending this event, please reach out to the Sibley County Extension office to receive more details when a final date is set.
Sibley County 4-H Records
The Sibley County 4-H Records are available online at Sibley County Extension click on resources. You should be able to print these and hand write them, or if you would like to type in the document, click File, Make a Copy. You will then be able to edit and type into the copied document.
Events Through 4-H Online
There are many great events coming up that you can register for through 4-H online. Just log into your family profile and click on events. Scroll through all the options, I am sure there is something that you may be interested in. Remember if there is a cost to the event, that the Sibley County Federation has scholarships available to reimburse a portion of the cost.
Clean Up Time
Fair Exhibit Building Clean–Up will happen on FRIDAY, July 29 – along with Food Stand Clean-Up. Each club is to have representatives there to help with this task. Clean up will start at 4:00 p.m. at the Fairgrounds, Arlington. Please bring old rags, buckets, brooms, paint brushes and lots of energy. Following clean-up will be the stalling meeting. Cleaning the Food Stand before or after the fair does not count as your shift to work in the Food Stand.
