Differentiating Instruction for English Language Learners

This workshop will provide participants with resources and research-based strategies to differentiate instruction for ELLs. Through modeling and discussions, this session will also serve as an overview of the RtI process in the context of a Sheltered Instruction classroom. Other topics include universal screening, progress monitoring, documentation of interventions, as well as domain-based Tier One interventions.

This one day sheltered instruction boot camp will delve into the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) in order to help teachers plan their instruction for English language learners. Come learn how to make your classroom a language rich environment that ensures students are acquiring English while learning your content. We will focus on strategies to increase students reading proficiency and writing skills across all content areas.

Long Term English Language Learners (LTELLs) represent a growing number of struggling language learners in Texas. These students show significant gaps in their schooling, and have unique literacy and linguistic needs that are different from recent arrival ELLs. LTELLs’ number of years in US schools can also pose a challenge with regard to the latest accountability measures. If your school district has seen an increase in your LTELL population, this workshop will provide participants with the background knowledge and tools for reaching the needs of these learners.

The literacy gap in our ELL student population harms student motivation, ability to learn in all content areas, grade promotion, and career and college readiness. Our charge is simple: we must do more in all contents to address the ELL literacy gap in our developing writers and readers.
This course supports understanding of the literacy gap and content teachers’ role in addressing student literacy. Content teachers and leaders will learn how to enrich their content instruction using easy-to-implement writing-to-learn strategies. The strategies in this workshop will engage student interest by activating background knowledge, assisting students’ processing of new information, and providing opportunities for reflecting on learning.
