The Week at a Glance
Weekly Concept: Sort it Out
Essential Question: In what ways are things alike? How are they different?
Next week our class will be reading stories about sorting different groups of things in new ways. Children will learn how to sort objects by size, shape, color, weight, or texture.
Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we will be practicing.
Word Workout
Vocabulary: sort, similar
Put a pile of multishaped and multi-colored blocks on the floor. Invite your child to sort the blocks by color and by shape.
My Words to Know
High-Frequency Words: come, does
Write the words come and does on paper. Then have your child write each word. Write sentences using each word. Have your child read the sentences aloud. Ask your child to circle the words come and does.
Category Words: opposites
Say a word and ask your child to think of a word with the opposite meaning.
Phonics: long e
Play a rhyming game with your child. Say a word with the long e sound, and have your child think of a rhyming word. For example, encourage your child to say and write words that rhyme with the word he, such as me, be, and we.

Muffins with Moms
With Mother's Day just around the corner, we are having a celebration! Mark your calendar for Friday, May 12 from 8:30-9:00 a.m. Moms (and mother-like guardians), take this opportunity to hang out in our classroom with your child, play some games and most of all, show him or her just how much you care!
Whitewater State Park Study Trip
In today's Friday folder you will find information about our upcoming visit to Whitewater State Park. We are working closely with the naturalist there to provide students with an informational hike to discuss the survival traits of plants and animals. Please complete the permission form and send the required fees by May 5th.
Spring Pictures
Your child received his or her spring pictures yesterday. If you choose to not purchase these photographs, then the package will need to be returned to school in its entirety A.S.A.P. Thank you for your cooperation.
Earth Day
Did you know that Saturday, April 22 is Earth Day? We have spent our week discussing ways to be kind to planet Earth. This, of course, led to a study of recycling. Ask your child to sing "I'm Goin' Green" for you, a song about recycling. In honor of Earth Day we took a hike to the on-site outdoor lab where we completed a nature scavenger hunt. It was big--and educational--fun!
Grandparents' Day
Please remind our honored guests, our grandparents, that Thursday, April 27th is our Grandparents Day from 9:30-10:30 a.m.. It will be held in the Union County High School auditorium. Grandparents may enter the main doors at the high school. Parking is available in the 4-H parking lot across the street. Remember, we ask that this day be reserved for grandparents only. Also, it is important to note that this Grandparents Day involves the kindergarten classes only. We are so looking forward to it!
