In reading, the students will continue to work on their book trailers during workshop time. We are also working on understanding relevant resources to use when researching a topic. We will also be reading Tuck Everlasting as a class book. I will read some out loud, and the students will read some to themselves. We will then compare and contrast the experience of reading a story vs. listening to a story. We will then watch Tuck Everlasting and compare and contrast that experience with the book.
In social studies, as we look at appropriate sources, we will also be working through Chapter 7 in our social studies textbook. This is a brief overview of World War I. The students will get the opportunity to do some extended research on a topic that they want to know more about. It will not be a project of any sort, just an opportunity for them to extend their learning. They will take the Chapter 7 social studies text on May 8th. After the social studies test is given, that will be the end of social studies for the marking period.
As this is our last newsletter of the year, I want to remind you and your student how important it is to read over the summer. It doesn't matter if it is a novel, magazine, newspaper, or blog. Set aside time everyday for your child to read. This is a great way to keep your child's brain ready to learn at the junior high.
In May, we will be finishing up Unit 7 and starting Unit 8 in math class. Our Unit 7 test will be on Tuesday, May 2nd. We will be taking the DOMA on Friday, May 5th. The DOMA is an online pre-algebra test that will be used as one of the determining factors for placement of the students in Junior High math. After the DOMA, we will begin Unit 8 which focuses on proportional reasoning, ratios and rates, expressions and equations and answering questions about real-world situations. There are only 9 lessons in Unit 8; we will be spending two or more days on each lesson. Games that go along with Unit 8 are Algebra Election, Solution Search, First to 100, and Ratio Comparison. They all can be found in the SRB in the game section. The Unit 8 Test will tentatively be planned for Thursday, May 25th.
The remainder of the year will be busy in Mrs. Seufert’s class. Here is what we will be accomplishing.
Word Work- We will be working on homographs and homonyms the first two weeks of the month. Those are the last new skills we will be learning. After that, we will review. The students will get onto my diigo site, Study Island, and NoRedInk to practice and reinforce their word work skills that they learned throughout the year.
Writing-We are continuing to work on our S.S.-based informational piece. We will be using text features, dividing our information into chapters, and adding quotes. After that, we will publish our piece and share. The students will then have an opportunity to create a digital presentation of their piece. Our last On-Demand Writing Prompt will be given on May 18th.
Science-We will continue our unit on environment and ecology. We will cover natural resources, sustainable resources, and historical events and people that have impacted our environment. The students will be completing three more projects this year. One will be an environmental history jigsaw activity. Then, we will work on an innovative design project, and the last one will be a timeline of important people and events. Time will be given in class to work on these projects. The students’ science interactive notebooks will be due on May 18th.
