Mechanical Energy

Definition- form of energy associated with the position and motion of an object.


How to find mechanical energy: Mechanical energy = Potential energy + Kinetic energy


Examples:

1.) The football being thrown in the air has mechanical energy.

2.) A moving car

Thermal Energy

Definition- the total amount of potential and kinetic energy of the particles in an object.


Examples:

1.) Lava flowing out of a volcano.

2.) The sun.

Electrical Energy

Definition- the energy of electrical charges.


Examples:

1.) Electrical charges in lightening

2.) Electrical lines along highways carry electrical charges

Chemical Energy

Definition- the potential energy stored in the chemical bonds that hold chemical compounds together.


Examples:

1.) There is chemical energy in grapes that can be used for later energy.

2.) Firewood has chemical energy that is released as the wood is burned.

Nuclear Energy

Definition- type of potential energy that is stored in the nucleus of an atom

The energy is released during a nuclear reaction.


Examples:

1.) The sun is a source of nuclear energy.

2.) The atomic bomb.

Electromagnetic Energy

Definition- a form of energy that travels in waves.


Examples:

1.) Food being heated in a microwave.

2.) Any visible light is an example
