My Professional Development Plan
Rachel Nachtrieb
My professional goal is to become a more effective 21st century educator by embracing, exploring, and utilizing technology to create a more meaningful educational experience.
Conferences and Workshop Opportunities
NYC DOE Citywide Curriculum Professional Development Team
I just recently received a list of upcoming opportunities for the next few months and there are two technology workshops I plan to attend: "A shared Path to Success: Digital Texts 101, Assistive Technology, Diverse Learners, and more" and "Tech Class-blogging, digital literacy, social media, and more." This weekend I am attending a math technology session through the NYC DOE and I am looking forward to learning more about the useful online components of our school wide Go Math mathematics program.
The annual NYC DOE Technology Summit will be an important event for me to attend. I was unable to attend last year, but this year the Tech Summit will be a priority when planning my summer.
United Federation of Teachers' Teacher Center
The UFT Teacher Center hosts multiple different workshops each month focusing on topics across the curriculum. They offer technology specific workshops and I plan to attend these regularly. I attended an excellent two day UFTTC workshop over the summer and came out of it with a renewed sense of energy and numerous ideas to implement in the new school year. I found it to be a valuable experiences and look forward to attending more workshops.
SMART Technologies & Teq
I receive invitations to attend webinars on a regular basis from SMART technologies, and I recently signed up to join the "SMART amp & Notebook 2014 Spotlight" at the end of October. I am unsure of what to expect but I am looking forward to learning about features and applications of the Smart collection I am unfamiliar with. I find this extremely important because I use the SMARTBoard for almost every lesson. While I have learned and implemented a great deal by exploring, I have never been trained on the Smartboard so I feel webinars would be another way to improve my effectiveness. A professor suggested we check out the Teq website for professional development opportunities, and I was amazed at the wide range webinars they offer. I haven't signed up for any yet, but in order to achieve my professional goal I want to take advantage of these opportunities.
Apple Workshops
I have always been a PC user and I know my Mac skills and knowledge are lacking. I am going to attend workshops on different topics at the Apple Store such as Mac computers and iPads because I want to gain more understanding of these systems. Most computers and tablets in my school are Apple, and while I have a basic knowledge, I am not truly comfortable with Macs. I also know I can learn more about iPads. I need to be better trained and informed if I want to effectively use these devices in the classroom.
Instructional Technology Mentors
Within my building I have already created a great mentoring relationship with the curriculum coordinator and the math coach. These two women are important leaders in my school and they were my "New Teacher" mentors. They both constantly work with a variety of technologies and are in constant contact with teachers from all over my building. They both provide me with support, ideas, and resources to help me grow. I will continue to work closely with them in order to more effectively integrate technology into my teaching. I also approached our technology specialist to ask for guidance and support. I will continue to work with him, observe his teaching methods and content, and help him update and care for the devices in our school. I also plan to contact our library media specialist to deepen our professional relationship and ask for her guidance.
Professional Organizations
International Society for Technology in Education
I am looking into attending the 2015 ISTE Expo & Conference in Philadelphia.
Opportunities to Present Professional Development
Technology in the Classroom
I will be conducting a workshop on Class Dojo. I had originally made this TechByte for EDPC 605, and then I realized I should share this information with my colleagues. I approaced my assistant principal and she told me about the new "Menu Mondays" and asked me to present a different TechByte each session. I had originally used PowerPoint for my Class Dojo presentation, but I am going to redo the presentation using Prezi to also introduce Prezi to my colleagues.
