Do you have experience related to science, technology, engineering, art or math? Are you looking for an opportunity to share your knowledge with Bresnahan students? If so, the STEAM Expo is your chance!
The annual STEAM Expo is a one-day event during which Grades 1-3 students rotate through hands-on STEAM-themed exhibits run by volunteers from across our community including non-profits, high school students, local businesses and more.
"The STEAM Expo is a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn from the volunteers that come. The students are provided with hands-on experiences of real world applications. I love to walk around to each table and see how engaged and excited the students are to partake in what the volunteers are teaching. This is a great way to introduce the next generation of critical thinkers, problem solvers, and innovators." - Kristin Spinney, STEM teacher for the Bresnahan
The 2024 Bresnahan STEAM Expo will be Thursday May 23, 2024 (8-1:30). Exhibitors will run 4, 12 minute sessions per grade level. If you’d like to exhibit, please fill out this google form. If you have any questions, please contact Jamie Sokolowski (jsokolowski@newburyport.k12.ma.us).
Reminder: Playing on School Property
It is always so wonderful to see students and families choosing to play outside on school grounds! Please help support our school values of “Be Safe, Be Kind, Be Responsible” after school gets out if your family stays to play on the hill or playgrounds. All are welcome to play under parent supervision but please be aware that we do not have a nurse on staff after 3:05 pm and our staff may not be available to assist/intervene after school hours.
Preschool parents, please be aware we still have students learning in the building after preschool is released at 1 pm, so playing away from the classroom windows and doors would be appreciated.
We are so lucky to have a beautiful school with open space to play - let's make it a great experience for everyone!
PBIS Reminders - Assemblies and Reminders of Expectations
This week our K-3 students reviewed what it means to be safe, kind, and responsible here at the Bresnahan. Students attended grade level assemblies where their peers modeled what expected behaviors look like in the hall, lunchroom, and recess. We encourage you to continue these conversations at home, reinforcing the importance of being safe, kind, and responsible not only at school but also in their daily lives.
The "Skills for Life" Series
Newburyport Rec and Youth Services proudly presents The "Skills for Life" Series. Brett Outchcunis [ooch-KEW-nis] is a professional personality and life coach for kids. "Ooch," as kids affectionately call him, specializes in quickly and deeply connecting with children on a level rarely accessed by other performers. His assembly programs cater to elementary and middle school students and focus on making positive life choices for a healthy state of mind and spirit.
His "Skills for Life" programs are designed to give students tools and techniques for navigating everyday life that are easy to use and remember... for a lifetime. Each show focuses on a specific life-skill that will be useful immediately, regardless of age.
Through the use of comedy, story-telling, creative moments, music and yo-yo antics (he’s been a professional YO YO guy for years), Ooch is able to connect quickly and deeply with his audiences. He uses this light-hearted combination of skills to deliver messages and techniques that give his audiences, "Skills FOR LIFE" and memories for a lifetime!
Ooch joined us in school yesterday presenting his Kinds of Kindness show! You can see videos of the event here.
Now, families are invited to the Family Night Series: Wednesdays Jan 17, 24, 31, Feb 7 from 6-7pm at the Nock Auditorium. This series is free thanks to Newburyport Rec and Youth Services (formerly NYS) Kids and families who attend most of the sessions are invited to a pizza party and YoYo lesson with Ooch before the last night at 5pm.

The Perfectly Imperfect Show
Newburyport Rec and Youth Services believes that all families can benefit from a fun, active evening together. Ooch’s style will have the kids moving and parents laughing. And it gives you so much to talk about at home. All of our children struggle in one area or another. Maybe your child struggles socially or is a perfectionist? Ooch's "Skills for Life" programming fills in these gaps with energetic examples and real life tools.
Inclusive Playground Panels
Thank you to the NEF, the Rotary Club and Melissa Duguie (Bresnahan Kindergarten Teacher) for helping to add four interactive panels to the playground! These panels will help students who may be temporarily injured, differently abled or who are overstimulated by the hustle and bustle of our busy playground.
The installation of these panels is not only an example of the Bresnahan’s commitment to inclusivity and making learning equitable for all students - but also a testament to the support of the community as well.
