GIVE HIM THE WHALE VIRTUAL BOOK STUDY
March 23, March 30, April 6, April 13, and April 20
3:30-4:30 p.m. via ZOOM
Do you know someone who loves whales? Or ceiling fans? Or elevators? Most of us do know learners with specific interests. Often, however, these favorites of students with autism are not celebrated but seen as annoying, problematic, or in need of "extinction."
Join us as we work through Dr. Paula Kluth's book, "Just Give Him the Whale: Using Passions, Areas of Expertise, and Strengths to Support Students with Autism." Give Him the Whale! is packed from start to finish with unforgettable stories based on the author's experience, firsthand perspectives from people with autism, research-based recommendations that are easy to use right away, and sample forms teachers can adapt for use in their classrooms.
Participants will meet every Thursday via ZOOM from March 23 - April 20 from 3:30 - 4:15 p.m. On April 13, Dr. Paula Kluth will join us live!! Participants will learn how honoring fascinations and using them as tools can help teachers calm, comfort, teach, inspire, and connect with their students with autism labels. ASHA CEUs will be provided.

SMoRRES- DISTRICT WIDE AAC MODELING
Day 1: April 27, 2023
Day 2: April 28, 2023
8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. via ZOOM
Jumpstart AAC implementation in your district and build capacity with the SMoRRES program, an effective method for teaching classroom staff to provide partner-augmented input (PAI) throughout the school day!
Day 1 is an introductory SMoRRES level 1 session appropriate for all school staff, including administrators, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, teachers, instructional assistants, and other professionals who work with children using AAC. A communication device, app, emulation software, book, or board is required to participate in a variety of interactive, hands-on training activities designed for learning or improving modeling skills.
Day 2 of the series is an intermediate, SMoRRES level 2 session appropriate for assistive technology specialists, speech-language pathologists, and team leaders. Day 2 is organized to teach participants the 8-step, evidence-based instructional program used to introduce participants to PAI on Day 1. Participants will learn the steps involved in implementing the communication partner training program. They will be provided with a DVD, PowerPoint presentation, and a printed manual to enable them to employ the program in their own schools.
Day 1 is a prerequisite to Day 2. Please email Katie Adams at kadams@esc11.net for the password to register for the Day 2 training. ASHA CEUs will be provided.
