If the north could prevent the south from exporting its cotton and importing supplies necessary to continue the war they would have an advantage in the war. At first the North didn't have enough ships and the south had blockade runners that could sail successfully in and out of the South. But overtime the North Blockade because more and more successful cutting the export of cotton by 95%. The war at sea also developed the first iron clad ships.
