Policy News

The Board adopted five revised policies that fall under the 1000 series, Legal Status & Operation.

  • Policy 1733; Board Member Compensation
  • Policy 1810; Annual Governance Goals and Objectives
  • Policy 1820; Board Self-Assessment
  • Policy 1822; Training & Development for Board Members
  • Policy 1830; Participation in School Board’s Association

New procedures went to the Board at the March 4th Board meeting:

· 1620P; The Board-Superintendent Relationship

· 1731P, Board Member Expenses

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After a long hiatus from sports, Season 1 finally opened on February 1st in Washington state. These traditional high school fall sports included Cross Country, Football, Girls Soccer, Girls Swim, and Volleyball. The Board received a report from Bremerton High School Athletic Director Casey Lindberg on the state of current Athletics & Activities. He reported that participation was higher than expected and the teams enjoyed a great season, which spanned seven weeks. Season 2 sports (traditional spring sports) began March 15th and will end on May 1.

The Board approved the updated Superintendent's contract, extending its duration until June 30, 2024, and approved the Letter of Agreement bringing school nurses into the fold of the Bremerton Professional Education Association (BPEA).

Study Session

The Board spent Thursday afternoon in a special session to look at the benefits of a balanced calendar and discussed exploring more options to benefit all students as children and staff return to the buildings.

CPR/AED Training

We are offering a blended learning Red Cross CPR/AED course. This will be in two parts, an online course that will take roughly 2.5 hours to complete and an in-person skills session. The online portion must be completed prior to attending the skills session.

There is a completion certificate at the end of your online course that can be emailed to Ioanna Cossack (ioanna.cossack@bremertonschools.org) for proof of completion. The skills session will be hands-on with the manikins. Please be aware that these skills do include ventilations during CPR and the requirement to be able to kneel on the floor for at least 2 minutes while providing compressions. All of the equipment is sanitized for your protection and you will not be sharing equipment with anyone else during your skill session.

The skills session with the instructor will take approximately 45 minutes, and these will begin on Wednesday, March 24th. To keep the number of participants limited in the classroom (Curriculum Library, Administration Bldg.), we will schedule probably three classes throughout Wednesday afternoon, beginning at 12:30 p.m.

If you're interested in taking the first class and will be available March 24th or March 31st, then let Ioanna know and she will get your names to Chriss Kuykendahl who will be teaching this first set of classes and will set up the schedule. If you are wondering whether it is required that you have CPR and First Aid, please check out the instructions below to get that information from Skyward.

If you'd like to take the classes but are not required by the District, please let Ioanna know and she will find out what the cost is. Thank you.

Music Department Hot Chocolate 5K

On March 13, Bremerton School District Transportation Director Marco DiCicco and BHS teachers Wendy McPheters and Max Karler participated in the VIRTUAL Seattle Hot Chocolate 5K - and invited some BHS music students to join them!

While they all would have preferred to run/walk in the REAL event, they had fun at the virtual event - and celebrated with hot chocolate at the finish!

Wendy said that it was a beautiful day for a walk and run, and it was great to see smiling faces (behind masks) of their students!

Reminder: Staff must sign-in to their buildings daily

All staff are required to check-in electronically any day they plan to be in a school building. This is important information for contract tracing purposes should we need to notify staff about possible COVID exposure. There are TWO daily tasks staff who are working in our buildings must complete:

  • Daily Health Assessment (in Skyward) - link sent daily to all District staff via email
  • Daily staff building check-in (varies by building).

This new PTA will be replacing/is a combination of the Bremerton High School PTA and Mountain View Middle School PTA.

Combining the administrative and management side into one allows more communication, more continuity between the schools, and much less administrative work for the volunteers.

Community Information & Resources

Hope Learning Community

Kitsap Strong/Graduate Strong in collaboration with the OESD 114 Teaching and Learning Division, received funding from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction to support the co-development of a hope toolkit for education professionals. The toolkit developed will include some recommended strategies and practices for PK-12 educators to promote and foster hope with students.

Invited education partners were from the alumni cohorts of the Trauma Sensitive Schools Collaborative Learning Academy interested in developing and testing hope-building strategies. Kitsap/Graduate Strong and OESD 114 staff will provide a deep dive into the science of hope and the three core components of hope theory. The hope toolkit will be co-developed through learning surfaced during this pilot project. The hope toolkit will also focus on culturally specific/relevant approaches that promote equitable outcomes for each and every student.

Congratulations and welcome to our Hope Learning Community school teams:
