AUSCWITZ

Auschwitz 1
Auschwitz 1 was the main camp. It was first an Austrian army barrack then it was turned into a Poland military base. When Poland was taken over by the Nazis it was turned into a Concentration camp for political prisoners then for the Jews and other people. Auschwitz as a death camp and a labor Jews and other groups of people that did not meet the Nazi expectations. Its main purpose was to exterminate the prisoners. Some accounts have up to a million people dying at Auschwitz.
Daily Lives
Factory Labor
Prisoners worked in factories as part of their daily routine. Factories produced rubber and chemicals for military use.
Medical Experiments
Medical experiments were conducted on a range of prisoners. Medical experiments were conducted on twins to see if they would die at the same time or in the same way.
Frozen
Germans had issues with hypothermia during the war. Prisoners were placed in baths of freezing water until they received hypothermia. Doctors would tr different ways to heat the body up to see if it would help battle hypothermia. This people ended up dying to damage to the brain stem.
People
Josef Mengele was born in 1911. He was the highest ranking physician at Auschwitz. He conducted research on twins and on eye color. He would place poison in twins to see if they would die at the same time.
Aushwitz ll- Birkenau
Was first built to hold 125,000 prisoners of war but it turned into a mass extermination camp. 9 out of every 10 Jews That died in Auschwitz died int the Brikenau section. In its final days it served as an area to deport prisoners to other camps.
Daily Lives
Gas Chamber
Here prisoners would walked in lines daily and would be gassed to death.
Bunks
These are the bunks which prisoners slept in. They had straw for padding.
Work Lines
Every day prisoners would line up for food then they would go work in factories or the farm fields.
Rudolf Hoss
He was the largest serving commandment of Auschwitz. He found out ways to increase the death rate of prisoners. He found out ways to ill 2,000 people every hour. He was hanged in 1947.
