Hello Malabar,
Thank you to those of you who have expressed your interest in teaching ELD after school intervention set to start on Feb. 21. Monday Feb. 7th is the last day to turn in your application. Please see me if you have any questions.
Also, I will be reaching out to some of you regarding early ELPAC summative testing for some of your students. Some of our students are close to reclassifying and would benefit from early testing and thus reclassify before the end of this school year.
Finally, this week we begin our SPSA plan writing discussion. I look forward to getting your input regarding the Parent/Student and Community Participation section of the plan. Thank again and have a great week!
Updates from our Title III Coach-Ricardo Melendez

Our English Learners need ample opportunities to be able to develop an understanding of how English works. Please contact me if you would like to plan and co-teach a lesson.
2021-2022 SPSA Measurable Goal
By June 2022, English Learners scoring proficient (Overall Level 4) on ELPAC will increase from 7% to 30% as measured by the Summative ELPAC assessment.
News from our STEAM Coach-Angela Muro
Hello colleagues,
We have made it past the halfway point for this school year. Woohoo! Alas, “testing” will be rearing its ugly head. Whether we like it or not, we will have to administer those mandated assessments required by the state and the district. Since we have not administered any CAASPP assessments in over two years, many of us are hoping that we can use the results/data as a baseline for future growth. Now, primary teachers may be thinking that this does not affect them. However, here is an excerpt from the CAST (California Science Test) Blueprint:
“Note that each assessment draws on PEs [Performance Expectations] from several grades. The grade five assessment draws on PEs from grades three through five (3–5) and also includes the foundational concepts that are addressed in kindergarten through grade 2 (K–2).”
Wow! This makes it clear that the onus is on all of us to honor that STEAM/IIS instructional block that we created when we became a STEAM Certified School.
On another note, Erica Lee, LDE STEAM Coach, and I will be visiting classrooms during your STEAM block. If your schedule has changed and you have not updated the Instructional Schedule you shared with Ms. Gutierrez, can you please do so as soon as possible?
Lastly, Malabar’s awesome STEAM/Math Committee met last week to plan some upcoming school events. We are in the process of creating a Science Olympiad event in March and a Family STEAM Challenge in April. We will be meeting again Monday @ 2:45 in Room 5. All are welcome to join us. Details of our upcoming activities will be coming soon. Other STEAM related events are:
Feb. 17 – STEAM Night hosted by 4th Grade
Mar. 17 – STEAM Night hosted by 5th Grade
As always, if you have any questions or need help with something, come by Room 5 or shoot me an email.

DIBELS MOY DATA ANALYSIS
I’d like to thank all our AMAZING Malabar teachers for your efforts to complete the DIBELS MOY Assessments. I know it was difficult with all the students being absent during the last few weeks. On Tuesday, February 8th our first hour of Bank Time will be dedicated to analyzing our DIBELS MOY Data. You will be given time to meet with your grade level, look at your data, probe assessments, and finally reorganize your literacy academy groups. Hard copy reports will be given to you on Monday. I will be joining the grade level Breakout rooms that I work with for support and to answer any questions.
T.A. Support
Due to the shortage of Teacher Assistants and the difficulties in hiring new ones, Mrs. Gutierrez, Ms. Chavez and I have come up with a new approach on how to better serve the needs of those students scoring in Well Below and Below in DIBELS. We will be working together with the T.A.’s during each Academy time slot and pulling those students in need to work with for forty minutes. This will then give you less students in your class to do small group instruction during Literacy Academies. We hope that this will accommodate for those teachers that have never been assigned a T.A. We are eager to try new things to support our student needs. We will be talking more on this during Tuesday’s P.D. Thank you for all that you do! We appreciate you!!!
Williams Textbook Visit-Tuesday, February 8
We were notified this week that we have a planned Williams visit scheduled for Tuesday, February 8.
The purpose of the Williams Visit is to determine if all students have district approved instructional materials (physical or digital) issued to them for use in class and to take home.
The county office team may be required to visually and verbally verify sufficiency of instructional materials by any combination of the following procedures:
- · Students may be asked to place the instructional materials on top of their desks. (elementary)
· Students may be asked to raise their hands or verbally indicate possession and/or lack of assigned instructional material.
· Students may be asked to identify the specific instructional material assigned to them.
· Students will be asked if they can access instructional materials ( textbooks, electronic media or online courses) at home.
· The title, author, edition, publisher and copyright date of instructional materials will be matched against the District Instructional Materials list to ensure all materials are district approved.
· All courses/classes listed in RLA/ELD, mathematics, history/social science, science, and health education may be reviewed.
Please check with Ms. Tiffer if you are missing any textbooks. We will plan for a mock visit on Monday just to make sure that we are ready on Tuesday.

Focus on Classroom Observations-Standard 3: Delivery of Instruction
As we visit classrooms, we will be focusing on the following two elements:
3b2. Discussion Techniques and Student Participation Techniques are used to ensure that all students share their thinking around challenging questionsEffective Practice: Teacher uses intentional, differentiated strategies to engage all students in discussion, attempting gradual release from teacher-directed to student initiated conversation. Students participate in intellectually challenging discussions.
3c1. Standards-Based Projects, Activities and Assignments Standards-aligned learning activities cognitively engage students in the lesson
Effective Practice: Instructional projects, activities and assignments are aligned to the instructional standards, require higher levels of thinking, are culturally relevant, and may include real-world application. Most students are cognitively engaged, constructing their own understanding and exploring content. The learning activities are differentiated, as necessary, to meet the learning needs of student subgroups.
During the month of February, I will be observing math and ELD instruction. The focus of the observation will be on opportunities for student discourse. I will schedule the observations based on your instructional schedules to ensure that I have enough time in the classroom to observe multiple opportunities for students to engage in discussion protocols.
