Manipulative in the Classroom
I cannot tell you how many times I have heard these statements! The fact of the matter is STUDENTS NEED MANIPULATIVES IN THE MATH CLASSROOM! Chances are, students struggle in math is because we skipped the concrete step in their math progression!! Ideally when students are learning about new concepts, they should move through these three phases: starting with math manipulatives, moving to visual representations, then ending with written methods.
Manipulatives make math very "straight forward" for all of our students. As their understanding grows, the way that they show their math thinking becomes more sophisticated and efficient, which is why we transition into using visuals and written methods. As new conepts develop, students need more hands-on experiences to help with understanding. Their mathematical development depends on this stage of learning.
From the "Mix and Math" author, Brittany, mathematical learning cycles back through phases for better understanding. Something to think about....
