Northern Southland College
Newsletter 6 August 2021, Term 3 Week 2
Kia ora koutou
Last week we welcomed Miss Llara Macgilloway to Northern Southland College with our school pōwhiri. Miss Macgilloway started her teaching career in Southland. Prior to being appointed as our Head of Science Miss Macgilloway taught at Nelson College for Girls. We look forward to getting to know Miss Macgilloway as she settles into NSC.
Thank you to all parents and students that were able to attend our Parent Teacher Interviews on Wednesday night. I trust that you all took valuable information away to help with progress over the remainder of the year. For any parent who was unable to attend but wishes to get feedback in addition to the mid-year reports that have been emailed, please email the teacher(s) concerned or get in touch with the College office.
Thursday 12 August is the NSC Open Night. This is a time for incoming students and families to see our school in action. We are delighted that over 65 NSC students have volunteered to help on the night, either as tour guides or classroom ambassadors. Students will be offered a light meal before Open Night begins at 5.30 pm. The evening concludes at 7.00pm.
A reminder that NSC will not be open for instruction on Monday 16 August as this is a Ministry of Education directed Secondary School Teacher Only Day. NSC staff will be working on NCEA resources with staff from other schools in various locations throughout Southland.
Finally, we wish Mrs Leach all the best as she finishes at NSC today to begin maternity leave. In the last newsletter I announced that Mrs Rodgers will be teaching Mrs Leach’s Mathematics classes for the remainder of the year. In addition to this, Mr Dixon will be our Junior Dean from Monday. Mr Dixon currently teaches or has taught all our junior students so he knows them well.

Year 9/10 Netball Tournament - Christchurch
With only a few weeks of preparation and a long drive ahead of us we all were extremely excited for the Christchurch tournament and couldn't wait to see where we were staying for the next three days.
The first day was the most nerve racking but went smoothly and was our most successful, winning 3 out of 3 games. We came back to the motel with dinner already in the oven, made by one of our amazing parents.
We went to the Tactix vs Stars game where most of us had a blast.
The second day was one of the best days in my opinion, although we lost all the games we played, we had an hour in the mall and had a little fashion show afterwards.
The last day of the tournament was the worst. We packed our stuff and left but while playing people were sick, and our bench required lots of buckets. The drive home we pretty much stopped at every public toilet between Christchurch and Lumsden but managed to get home safe and sound, happy with our time away and very pleased with our 16th placing out of 32 teams in the South Island.
A huge thank you to Miss Stark and Mrs Cullen for giving up their time in the holidays to come away with us fabulous girls.
The proposed date for our 2021 NSC Ski Trip is Saturday 11 September. Any student, sibling, family member or friend can attend. More information will be available soon regarding transport options. Student price for lift pass, lesson & ski rentals is $90; Adults $120-$140 (depending on number of students).
