An MSD Staff Communication that Cuts out the Clutter!

December 30th, 2021

Greetings, Mighty Medford Educators!

We hope you’ve had a wonderful holiday and enjoyed the snow that came our way! It was a beautiful addition to the season (though it did create some travel headaches for many of us and our families coming and going into the valley, of course)!

As we head into the New Year, I wanted to update you on a few items: the 2022-2023 calendar, attendance zoning, and, of course, the omicron variant.

Here’s to a 2022 filled with hope and joy. I appreciate all you do for and with our students!

Main Thing 1: 2022-23 School Calendar

The Medford School District Board of Directors approved the 2022-2023 school year at their meeting on December 16. You can view the calendar here. Thank you to those of you who took the time to fill out the calendar survey we sent out in November; we used the feedback to build our calendar proposal.

Here are some important dates to note:

  • August 17-19: New Teacher Inservice Days

  • August 22-25: Planning Prep/Professional Development Days

  • August 26: First Day of Instruction for Designated students (Kindergarten soft start, 1st- 7th grade and 9th grade first day of instruction)

  • August 29: First day for all students grades 1-12, kindergarten soft start continues

  • October 14: Statewide Inservice day is now a professional development day for all MSD employees

Other calendar changes to note:

  • 191 teacher contract days, 171 student/conference days, 13 planning/prep days and 7 paid holidays

  • Mid-Quarter Grading/Professional Development days moved to Wednesdays throughout the calendar.

  • End of Quarter Grading days move to Mondays throughout the calendar (extends Spring Break for students by one day)

Thank you to representatives from MEA and OSEA who served on a calendar committee that helped develop the calendar.

Main Thing 2: Attendance Zoning

In case you missed it, Medford’s third middle school has a name, Oakdale Middle School! Crews are making great progress on upgrades to the building and we continue to plan for an August 2023 opening. We will reconvene our Attendance Zoning Committee this month, which will be charged with proposing new attendance zones to the Board of Directors this spring. If you would like to serve on the committee, fill out this form. To learn more about our attendance zoning process, click here.

Main Thing 3: Omicron

We know that as much as we want COVID-19 to be a thing of the past, it’s still here. We’ve received a few questions about the omicron variant and whether it will force us back into comprehensive distance learning. At this time, there are neither plans nor any indication from the state that we would be required to return to distance learning. We continue to operate with a multi-layered safety approach to COVID mitigation and will return to school as scheduled on January 3. The health and safety of our students, staff, and community continue to be our top priorities. View our Safety Standards here.
