We are hoping for 100% parent/guardian participation for conferences.
This is an important time to connect with your child's teacher and set goals together for the year. Conferences will be in person this year, but if you need to have a ZOOM conference instead, please let your child's teacher know and we are happy to accommodate. 🙂

Adopt-A-Road Clean-up this Friday @ 10am
Bethany Families - Come join Green Team to help with Roadside Clean-up!
Twice a year we pick up garbage along 174th in front of our school. Come grab a pair of pinchers, a vest, & a bag and bring your volunteer spirit to help keep our community clean!
Read-A-Thon Logs Due Monday
Thanks for your participation in this year’s Read-A-Thon! Through 99Pledges alone we’ve raised almost $12,00! We can’t wait to tally your manual donations and corporate matches!
All reading logs (even blank!) should be turned in to your child’s teacher on Monday, November 7th. Please also turn in any manual pledge sheets and cash or checks collected (this is not necessary if you fundraised using 99Pledges).
Parking Lot Reminders
As the weather turns cold and rainy, we want to remind you of a few important things:
- Please drive slowly when dropping off and picking up students. We are having cars drive fast out of the parking lot. Please be watching for young children who may enter the road.
- We encourage all parents to go through the Pick-up line. We are working on making sure there are two lines, both lines will turn for K-2nd grades. This helps keep traffic off of 174th.
- If you do park to pick up your child, we ask that you stay and wait for traffic behind you to clear. We are having cars that are trying to back up and leave, while cars are still coming in.
Lost And Found
We have collected many coats, sweatshirts and other important items. We had volunteers go through the clothes and any with names were returned to the students.
We will have the lost and found on tables in the lobby during Conferences. Please make sure to look through them for anything you might be missing. We also encourage you to write your student's name on any coat / sweatshirt that they wear.
Hand Sanitizer Donations
During the last few years the District was providing hand sanitizer for schools. That plan has now stopped and we need to provide our own bottles.
We could use your help. If you are willing to donate a bottle or two (foam preferred), you can bring it to the office. We will also have a table in the lobby during conferences for any donations.

National Microtia Awareness Day, November 9th
Hello, we are the Lichtenberger family and our daughter Lily, whom is a 1st grader this year, was born with microtia atresia of the right ear. Our goal as parents is to spread awareness and celebrate Lily’s differences. “We’re different and we’re the same”.
Lily was born with microtia atresia of the right ear (grade 3), which means that she is partially deaf . Lily does have a BAHA, a bone conductive hearing device, but has disliked wearing it since she was a baby and it is something that we do not enforce unless her safety is at risk.
Having microtia has its challenges. With Lily being partially deaf, she relies solely on her “big ear” to hear. We are always mindful of loud noises when it comes to her “big ear” to protect her hearing. Wearing sunglasses, masks, or headbands also brings its own challenges due to her little ear not able to support them, but we have taken every challenge in stride.

OBOB News from Ms. Hussain
The Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is a statewide voluntary reading motivation and comprehension program sponsored by the Oregon Association of School Libraries. Students in 3rd- 5th grades at Bethany Elementary are invited to form teams and participate in this program. The 16 books for the elementary level has been picked by OASL to introduce children to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints.
OBOB’s mission is to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, to broaden reading interests, to increase reading comprehension, promote academic excellence, and to promote cooperative learning and teamwork among students.
OBOB is a student driven activity supported by parent volunteers. The students need to create their own teams of 4 members from their own grade. They will compete first among their grade and then other grades to find the winning team to represent Bethany Elementary School at Regionals in Feb-March 2023. If they win at Regionals they go on to compete at the State level mid April 2023.
The books can be read by the student, read to the student by a family member or listened to audibly. Books will be made available through our school library, through Washington County Community library system( Cedar Mill and Bethany public libraries have many copies) and through our electronic library Sora. This is a fun way to introduce new genres and authors to your child!
I am introducing this program to the students in 3-5 grades during their library specials period. We are discussing the importance of trying new genres, learning new perspectives through reading and “ reading with a purpose”.
Form your teams, find a unique name for your team, start reading and look for more updates in the school newsletter about registering your team!

5th Grade - Weekly News
The 5th grade teachers have created a matching grant fundraiser. Your support can help our students connect to the world around them through individual subscriptions to The Week Junior. By introducing a steady flow of current events into our classroom, our kids will be better informed and better prepared for the bigger conversations we hope to have around rights, responsibility and community.

Little Ears are Listening
We LOVE having volunteers back in the building and so many families on campus after school and at events. It has come to my attention that a few people may need some reminders about KID-APPROPRIATE language while on school grounds...and hopefully anytime children are around. (I don't know who...and I don't want to know).
Just remember...kids may not always be listening...but they HEAR everything!

Local Levy
On November 8, 2022, voters will have the opportunity to decide whether to renew a 5-year local option levy. If passed, the proposed levy renewal would fund approximately 286 teaching positions, maintain class sizes and help prepare students for post-high school endeavors. The proposed levy renewal is projected to raise approximately $39-$43 million annually; over a 5-year period, the proposed levy renewal would raise about $205 million.
If passed, the proposed levy renewal would continue the existing tax rate of $1.25 per $1,000 of assessed property value.
If the proposed levy renewal does not pass, the levy rate would not be assessed. The District would not receive about $39 million to fund 286 teaching positions, maintain class sizes and help prepare students for post-high school endeavors, starting in the 2023-2024 school year.
