September was Attendance Awareness Month
September was National Attendance Awareness Month! It’s a bigger problem than you probably think. Learn more about chronic absence and join the Attendance Awareness Campaign today! http://bit.ly/1oqfID7
Many of our schools had attendance incentives and rewards encouraging good attendance habits early in the 22-23 school year!
Intersession Days
The end of September has our first Intersession Break right around the corner based on our newly adopted modified school calendar for the 2022-2023 school year. Students and teachers will be off from school October 5th, 6th and 7th. We realize this new calendar may bring adjustments for families but we are hopeful the benefits and educational rewards are great. Districts that have implemented modified calendars reported:
- a positive impact on student achievement.
- improved attendance.
- reduction in discipline incidents.
- reduced teacher burnout; and
- balanced time inside and outside the classroom for students, teachers and staff.
We hope our teachers, staff, students and families enjoy these days to recharge and refocus, ready to return, striving for excellence!
MCSD Celebrates Grandparents!
Marion County School District Introduces FIRST Lego League
Marion County School District is excited to announce for the 2022-2023 school year the introduction of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology) LEGO Leagues that introduce science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through fun, exciting hands-on learning. Participants gain real-world problem solving experience through a guided, global robotics program, helping today's students and teachers build a better future together. MCSD will have two teams participating in the FIRST LEGO League Challenge competition. The 4th and 5th grade team at McCormick Elementary School in Mullins is coached by Mrs. Natalie Grover and assisted by Ms. Amy Weeks. The 6th -8th team at Creek Bridge STEM Academy in Centenary is coached by Dr. Kristel Wallace and assisted by Mrs. Michelle Altman. As the students work with this season’s theme of Super Powered, they will explore where energy comes from and how it is distributed, stored and used. Our robotics team members will be working to reimagine and innovate for a better energy future through critical thinking, team work and coding skills. All while having a lot of fun! During the competitions our teams will be judged in the areas of Core Values, Robot Design, Robot Game and an Innovation Project. For the Innovation Project, our teams will need to identify and research a real-world problem in the area of energy to solve. During the competition they will present a model, drawing or prototype as a solution for the problem. If you are interested in more information or would like to help our teams through volunteering or sponsorship, please email Mrs. Becky Ford, Academic Officer for STEAM Education, at bford@marion.k12.sc.us.
ExCEL Program
ExCEL (Exceptional Children, Exceptional Learning) is Marion County School District's program for Gifted and Talented students in grades 3-5. This year, our students will focus on INTERCODE, which is an innovative design model that will expose our learners to 21st century innovation STEM programming (code) immersed with core content, project based learning, and real-world problem solving partnered with STEM U. If you would like to learn more about ExCEL, please contact Martina Rush, Director of Student Services, via email mrush@marion.k12.sc.us or phone 843-423-1811.
Marion County School District has enrolled with STOPit, the leading technology platform for schools that deters and controls harmful or inappropriate conduct. STOPit empowers students to stand up for themselves and others while giving our schools the insight we need to keep students safe.
Our STOPit program launch is scheduled for October 10, 2022 at the following schools: Marion High School, Mullins High School, Creek Bridge STEM Academy (middle school students only), Johnakin Middle School, Palmetto Middle School and Success Academy at Palmetto Education Center. Mullins Sesquicentennial (150th) Anniversary
Marion County School District participated in the celebration of Mullins Sesquicentennial! Marion and Mullins High School bands, the ROTCs from both schools and Dr. Kandace Bethea participated in the parade. Our high school bands and ROTC were outstanding! Friday, September 23, 2022 the City of Mullins also buried a time capsule to be opened in the year 2072, 50 years from now! The school district and some of our schools participated by contributing items to be buried in the time capsule. From pictures, to a copy of "The Pulse" and a few other items were buried Friday. It certainly will be interesting in 50 years when the capsule is opened!
