Please remember that re-enrollment information is due by January 24th. To re-enroll your student, please log in to your student's Skyward account. You must also upload proof of residency. If you have any questions about re-enrollment, please contact the front office.
This week students can look forward to Bilingual Movie Night hosted by the Spanish Club. Several other student groups are also organizing many fun activities for the students this semester.

Featured Teacher
Dr. Derek Goodson
Dr. Derek Goodson is our high school's biomedical sciences teacher. This is his 5th year with Harmony School of Excellence. Here are some interesting facts about him.
Where were you born? Dallas, Texas
What is your favorite book? The Three Musketeers
What is your favorite movie? The Crow
Where did you attend college and what degree did you earn? Parker University; Bachelor of Science in Anatomy, Bachelor of Science in Health and Wellness, and Doctorate in Chiropractics
Why did you become a teacher or decide to work in education? I became a teacher after wanting to substitute at Harmony. The school needed a 6th grade science teacher, and I was offered the position of 6th grade science teacher and accepted it. I planned to teach for only a couple of years and then move on to open my own chiropractic practice. However, after teaching I found that I enjoyed working with the students and decided to continue teaching for many more years.
What else do you do for Harmony? Sponsor teacher for Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA)
When you see Dr. Goodson, tell him how much he is appreciated. We are so thankful he is here!

Gifted and Talented
In accordance with the Texas State Plan for the Education of Gifted/Talented students, Harmony Public Schools will begin taking referrals for all interested students in grades K-12 for Gifted and Talented (G/T) screening.
Anyone interested in the educational welfare of these students may nominate them for assessment. Students in grades 2 & up who were tested in Fall 2019 are not eligible to test in Spring 2020. Referral forms are available at the front office and on the school’s website.
Parent GT Referral Form in English
Parent GT Referral Form in Spanish
The referral forms must be returned to the front office by Friday, February 7, 2020. The Spring GT testing window is set by the campus in February or March. Campuses may elect to use NWEA MAP scores as a prescreening criterion for GT Testing.
For more information about the screening and identification process, parents may contact the school’s GT Coach/teacher.
Financial Aid
In order to receive financial aid in the form or loans, grants, or scholarships, students need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, also known as FAFSA. Even students who do not plan on needing financial aid should complete the application as it may give them access to scholarships they otherwise would not have access to. Please work together with your student to complete the application as soon as possible as FAFSA money is first come first served! If you need assistance in completing the application, please contact the counselors.

Smart Snacks in School
You Art What you eat
The Texas Department of Agriculture’s (TDA’s) You Art What You Eat statewide student art contest engages students K-12 in learning about healthy nutrition. The art contest encourages students to use their imagination to illustrate healthy school meals while incorporating TDA’s theme.
The winning entries inspire designs for cafeteria posters, social media ads, flyers and other
resources that will be displayed in schools across Texas during National School Lunch Week
and School Breakfast Week. TDA focuses on challenging kids and staff to try new foods
offered in the cafeteria every day through the National School Lunch Program and School
Breakfast Program. Each school that offers these programs has an opportunity to celebrate
nutritious meals at school during National School Lunch Week in the fall, and School Breakfast Week in the spring.
The original artwork from the winners and runners up will be displayed in the State Capitol
each spring. Specific dates can be found online at www.SquareMeals.org/ArtContest.
Art Contest Categories
Students can enter their artwork in one or both of the following categories:
o National School Lunch Week category – include healthy school lunch items into art
o School Breakfast Week category –incorporate healthy school breakfast items into art

o Primary (Kindergarten – 5th grade)
o Secondary (6th grade – 12th grade)
Eligibility

and School Breakfast Program in kindergarten through twelfth grade is invited to participate.

Free/ Reduced Price Meal Application
Every year, your family is encouraged to submit a Free and Reduced Price Meal Application. It is important to fill out this form online at School Cafe for three reasons:
1. The application lets us know if your child is eligible for free or reduced price school meals. Children from families that earn below a certain income level can receive free or reduced price breakfast and lunch at school.
2. Your family may qualify for local educational programs and other local programs that provide benefits such as free textbooks or school supplies, free band instruments, or reduced fees for summer school or driver education in addition to reduced fees for the PSAT, SAT or Advanced Placement and College testing. They may even qualify for college tuition for dual credit courses.
3. Applications are used to match funding our school receives for resources for students such as books and classroom furniture.
The application is easy to fill out and easy to understand. Also, you do not have to worry about your information being shared with others because application information is CONFIDENTIAL. Support the School Breakfast and Lunch Program today by completing your application! If you have any questions, feel free to contact the Child Nutrition Program Assistant, Ms. Brown, at leann.brown@harmonytx.org.
