Men of Distinction

Vol. 2, Ed. 7, 12.1.2017

Mr. Owens believes...

"As a nation, we are in need of educating EVERY child to their highest potential. We need to offer an avenue of hope and accomplishment to help children reach their goals. Mentorship has always been a part of my life and I hope that I will be able to leave a legacy of building up children so they won't become broken men. May our children leave us and go out into the world and make it a better place." ~ Mr. Melvin J. Owens

November 2017 Lunch and Learn

The Men of Distinction and their mentors had a great time having lunch, catching up, and discussing the message from Mr. Doug Mulvihill, over "Loyalty". Mr. Mulvihill used a model Titanic replica ship (he built himself) to teach the lesson. "Because of disloyalty of the owners, engineers, and the captain - a lot of people died that night. You must be loyal to friends and family because they count on you for support. If you are asked to do something that is wrong - don't do it! Loyalty is generally a good quality and you show commitment through difficult times. Keep your commitments, care about people, encourage others in the right direction, help those in need, and serve your community." Mr. Mulvihill had the MoD's to do a lesson with their mentors focusing around the question - how are they being loyal to their family, teachers, and friends. He ended the lesson with the following words to the guys - "Show up, do your best, and be accountable".

Mr. Shawn Sheehan, National Teacher of the Year Finalist, speaks to the Men of Distinction

Mr. Shawn Sheehan spoke to the guys about perseverance and never giving up on your dreams in life. He shared his story of beating the odds and always finding hope when he was down in the valley's of life. Being adopted as a baby (great support system from his adopted family), growing up in a community that wasn't kind to him (he didn't speak spanish growing up in Phoenix, AZ), and having to learn how to deal with being treated differently (he didn't look like his adopted family) - rising above adversity has been his story and he is a guy who went from tough times to meeting the President of the United States. Becoming a National Teacher of the Year Finalist, running for State Senator in Oklahoma, and inspiring a ton of people to choose being a teacher for their profession. Mr. Sheehan didn't get to live his childhood dream of becoming a military man and serving his country, but he has been able to serve his country in the most profound way - being a teacher that changes lives daily. Thank you so much Mr. Sheehan for sharing your story and inspiration with the Men of Distinction. #teachlikeme @SPSheehan

November lunch with my Mentor...

It is always great to see what mentorship is all about. The mentors and their MoD breaking bread together and sharing stories about their lives. So many things are learned from both the mentor and mentee during these sessions. Thank you again Community Mentors for helping our boys become young men.
