Happy New Year 2018!
Winter Weather is Here!!
Winter weather is here. Our school policy is to go outside for recess any time the temperature, including wind chill, is 10 degrees or higher as stated in our handbook (p. 21). Please make sure your child is properly dressed for the weather. Hats, mittens, boots, snow pants, and a warm coat are all needed for the colder weather. Parents will be notified if we feel their child is inappropriately dressed for the weather conditions. Administrative discretion may deem that the weather or playground conditions at an individual school require students to stay indoors for recess. It is important that our children have the ability to run around and get some exercise. Weather will be checked prior to each recess to verify the wind chill.
Also, if school is closed, a SchoolMessenger message will be sent out. In addition, the district website (www.sandwich430.org) will contain information regarding school closings. If a school is closed for an emergency during the day, parents will be notified by a SchoolMessenger phone call.
Coming Soon - St. Jude's Math-a-thon Fundraiser!
The kick-off for St. Jude Math-a-thon will be Tuesday, January 9, 2018. During P.E. class, the children will receive instructions and money collection envelope on that day. Included in the booklet is the permission/consent form. If your child is going to participate, please choose whether they want to have a print version of the math booklet or do the work on the computer. Permission slips need to be turned in by Friday, January 12th, so we can order the booklets for your student to participate.
The Math-a-thon will end on Friday, February 2, 2018. Please have your donations turned in to Haskin by that time.
We have participated with St. Jude since 2004, and to date, we have raised approximately $42,000! Thank you for your participation in this worthwhile program!

News from the Nurse
Winter has arrived and with it comes an increase of weather related illnesses such as asthma. Just a reminder that any medication brought to school, including inhalers, must have a school medication form completed and on file in the main office. If you have any questions regarding medication at school please contact Mrs. Meyer, School Nurse at 815-786-8812.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Haskin’s Christmas Tree
Haskin Elementary participated again this year in the Sandwich Park District’s Festival of Trees.
P.E. News
In Pre-K, we had an apple orchard in our dramatic play center. The kids would pick the apples and sort them by color into the baskets. The children also pretended to make apple pies and purchase them at the bakery! Click on the movie link below!
Gingerbread Fun in Kindergarten!
The kindergarten classes have spent the month of December doing many gingerbread man inspired activities. Some of the activities included painting and coloring big gingerbread playhouses, reading many stories of the gingerbread man, the gingerbread girl, and the gingerbread baby. Kindergarteners also decorated a paper gingerbread man, used gingerbread men for learning addition, made gingerbread slime, built a bridge, and a fort for gingerbread man to hide in! Lastly, we decorated gingerbread cookies that mysteriously disappeared but were later found in the school! Also, both kindergarten classes had a special gingerbread friend arrive from the North Pole to stay in their classroom, reminding them to be good for Santa. Mrs. Wells' class named their gingerbread friend "Jingles", and Mrs. Schmitt's class named their gingerbread friend "Star Wars Rainbow". Let's hope Jingles and Star Wars Rainbow give Santa a good report about the boys and girls in kindergarten!
5th Graders Visit Kindergarten
This month, the 5th graders from Herman E. Dummer School came to the kindergarten classrooms to help the kindergarten children write letters to Santa. Each kindergarten student had one or two 5th graders to help them with their letter. It was a great time for all!
1st Grade Goes to Hoover and the Opera House
The first graders went to Hoover Outdoor Education center on December 11th. They learned all about animals and plants. They discussed how animals resemble their parents and how they survive and camouflage themselves from predators. The other lesson the classes participated in was map skills. We discussed that all maps need 3 things: a title, a compass rose, and a key or legend. We made our own map of Hoover and then took our maps out on a hike. We had different group lead the way and read the map to find different landmarks. Brrr! It was a cold day outside but we had fun and learned a lot!
The first graders also went to the Opera House this past week to see the Allegro Dance Company from Oswego perform the Nutcracker! We learned about the history of ballet which began over 400 years ago! The children learned about the different types of ballet and dresses they wore while also seeing the girls dance. The first graders also heard the story of the Nutcracker. We were even lucky enough to watch Mrs. Warner’s daughter, Hailey, dance!
Second grade is learning about Holidays Around the World. The students used the map to locate 8 different countries around the world including America, Germany, France, and Mexico. They are studying holiday traditions, food, and decorations. Some holidays include Christmas, Hanukkah, Los Posadas, St. Lucia's Day, and Kwanzaa.
Marilyn Abbott from the Rotary Club of Sandwich recently presented the Haskin School third graders with dictionaries. The dicitionaries feature definitions, Braille, sign language, and a multiplication table. Mrs. Butler and Mrs. Dougherty would like to thank the Rotary Club of Sandwich for their generous donation.
Equine Dreams visits 3rd Grade
Haskin thirds graders received a visit from Equine Dreams. Sharon Mason, owner of Equine Dreams, along with many of her co-workers and volunteers, brought her miniature horses Teddy, Beauty, and Poco to share some time with the students. Equine Dreams is an organization, which provides equine assisted activities to children and adults through the use of therapy horses. Haskin third graders had learned about therapy animals during their literacy time. The students were able to introduce themselves to the horses, pet them, and even braid their manes.
