Auschwitz 1
Auschwitz as a whole was opened in 1940, and was the largest of the concentration/death camps in Europe, as well as the most well known. Auschwitz 1 was the original camp, and housed the barracks for the prisoners, and was a labor camp. The words on the gate say, "Arbeit Macht Frei", which translates to, ironically enough, "Work makes you free."

This is a picture of the gates to Auschwitz 1, the labor camp.
Auschwitz-Berkinau
This is a picture of Auschwitz-Berkinau, which was the extermination camp.
Prisoners
These people are located in the Auschwitz camp. Most of those people may have not come out alive, had this picture been taken before the Red Army arrived, it's really depressing
Auschwitz-Berkinau
Auschwitz-Berkinau was the extermination camp. It contained the gas chambers, where people were executed in masses, and the crematoriums, where the dead bodies would be burned. It's truly a despicable place when you think about it.
