Rotorua Intermediate - 3 March 2021
Festival on the Field
Due to being back in COVID Level 2 our Festival on the Field will be postponed with a date to be confirmed later in the Term.
Thank you
We are looking forward to seeing our families and extended whanau at our upcoming
‘Festival on the Field’.
This event provides an informal opportunity to interact with your child’s teacher as part of getting to know each other and building positive learning partnerships.
The event is being held on Thursday 4 March between 5pm and 7pm. Changed due to Covid L2 Alert this week.
This is an opportunity for you to bring your family, bring your dinner, make yourself a picnic spot on the grass and enjoy some live entertainment performed by current and past pupils, along with special guest items by well known local entertainers.
It is also an opportunity to chat to your child’s teacher about how your child has settled into class, as well as sharing the feedback you are receiving at home.
See you there!

Mauri Ora
Greetings and warm wishes to parents of our returning students and parents of our new students alike. We return in 2021 with a new name for our student centre and support programme, but a familiar approach to supporting your children.
The goal of the Mauri Ora team is to promote the wellbeing of our students so that they may achieve their full potential. We understand that life can be tricky sometimes, so we are always available to discuss any concerns you may have about how your child is coping with the rapid social and emotional changes they may be experiencing as they embark on their journey toward adolescence and beyond. We are also available to be a listening ear and provide emotional 'first aid' to any student who is struggling to make sense of the thoughts and feelings they may be having. Our key support strategies include:
- Relationship building/whakawhanaungatanga (with both students and their whanau): The development of trusting relationships with our students is one of the most important tools we have. It allows us to sort through issues faster and to gain a deeper insight into what may be happening for a student
- Empathetic engagement: The use of empathy and kindness is our 'go-to'. It is by using this type of approach that we are able to build the trusting relationships that are so vital to our work
- Restorative resolutions: When we make a mistake it is important that we learn to make amends. This helps to heal any rifts and allows us to move forward. Our school kaupapa relies heavily on a restorative approach to conflict. It allows students to feel heard and validated, teaches the important life skill of owning our mistakes and the honour found in making things 'right'.
About our Team:
Whaea Susan:
Whaea Susan is our Lead Counsellor and has been with us since 2019. She has over 18 years experience working with children and whanau in both social work and counselling capacities. She has significant experience in the child and adolescent mental health sector and is passionate about supporting students to develop the emotional tools required to become kind and resilient adults.
Whaea Amanda:
Whaea Amanda is a much loved member of our school and has been for 9 years. Starting as a teacher aide, it became evident that she possessed the warmth, kindness and life experience which meant she was a perfect fit for the Mauri Ora team. Heavily involved in Te Ara Poutama (our sports class), Whaea Amanda's genuine care and empathy has impacted positively on many past and present students and we wouldn't be without her.
Matua Matiu ('Matty')
Matua Matiu is the newest member of our team. His youthful and down to earth approach has been well received by our students and his passion and aptitude for rugby means that he is well placed to support our students in more active pursuits designed to develop their confidence, social skills and ability to relate to others as part of a team.
The Mauri Ora Team would like to extend an invitation to all students and their families to come and meet with us to discuss the ways that we can provide support while a part of our Rotorua Intermediate whanau. Students can find us in the Mauri Ora Centre - 'Te Whare Mauri Ora' (they can ask their teacher or any of our Year 8 Prefects if they are unsure) and parents/caregivers are welcome to call the school office and request to be put through to either Whaea Susan or Whaea Amanda.
Heres to a great 2021!
Mauri Ora!
