What is going on?
Writing: Students will practice writing to a prompt. Prompts will include expository and imaginative topics covering skills, such as, compare/contrast, supporting an opinion statement, and point of view.
Spelling Words and Grammar: There will be no spelling this week or the week we return from the break.
Reading: In Reading Workshop we will be comparing and contrasting cultures. We will be looking at what makes each unique.
Math: In Math we will assess student learning with an end of unit test. We will also be working on problem solving and logic puzzles.
Social Studies/PBL: This PBL will focus on Holiday Traditions around the world. We will learn about world cultures, compare them to each other, create a culture doll and posters for around the school. Students will learn how holidays have some similar customs, celebrations, and traditions.

Math test next week- I am giving our kids an end of unit test. They will be tested on place value with models, Addition and Subtraction in Word Problems, Fact Families, Graphs, Least to Greatest, Less than and Greater than, Standard, Expanded, and Written form (writing a number)Attributes of a Polygon and 2d shapes. I look at this test a lot while I am working on report cards. If you have time this weekend, please study.
I will also be checking in on my kids reading level after the break. Please keep them reading. Lots of easy reading, makes reading easy!
Thank you very much for the generous donations of marshmallows and toothpicks. You can see from the pictures, the kids had a grand time making 3-d geometric shapes.

Science Fair
It’s that time of the year again! Science Fair is right around the corner. Join us in the library for Science Research Night on Thursday, December 8, from 5:30-6:30. We will have books, rubrics and some science project examples displayed to help your child get in their scientific mindset. All grade levels may participate, however, only grades 3-5 will be judged and may progress to regional. Science fair projects will be due Tuesday, January 17 no later than 7:35am. Judging will take place on Wednesday, January 18. Students will take projects to their classroom. http://sommersciencefair.blogspot.com/

Sommer PTA Healthy Lifestyles is sponsoring our very own STALLION WALL OF CHAMPIONS! Do we have any football or basketball players out there? Perhaps you like to hike or bike. Maybe a dance class or a pickup game of baseball at the park? We need photos of you BEING ACTIVE for our Wall Of Champions! All grades, and all faculty and staff are invited to participate. Photos need to be 5x7 or smaller, and turned in to the marked envelope in the gym during PE or before school starting this week. If you would like your photo returned, it must have your name, teacher, and grade on the back.
Sommer ES will celebrate EGGI week (education go get it) January 16-20, 2017. The theme is DREAM BIG. We are looking for parent volunteers to come and visit with classes about their job. We are only asking for 1-2 hours of your time. TOY DRIVE benefiting Williamson County Brown Santa Program
Each year, our Sommer PTA sponsors a toy drive to benefit the Williamson County Sheriff's Department Brown Santa program. If you would like to help, please bring a new, unwrapped, non-violent toy or book to school during the week of Monday, Dec. 5th- Monday Dec. 12th. Each classroom will have a donation box. All donations will go directly to the Williamson County Brown Santa program which provides assistance to families in need in Williamson County.
