Curriculum Corner
It has been so fun to see the enthusiasm our writers have had! We will continue our study of Ralph Fletcher's A Writer's Notebook this week to explore how writers find ideas and inspiration. The beginning is often messy and that's OK! It is important for writers to keep their ideas in a place where they can go back and revise them later.
Indiana History
We will spend this week and part of next week working on map skills. This week will be spent creating an interactive map, with early next week doing some practice with those skills. We will take an assessment over map skills on 9/3.
Wordly Wise
We spent last week practicing and playing games to learn the unit 1 words. We will continue practicing these words this week, as well as establishing the routines that will soon become independent. There will be a test over unit 1 this Friday. Tests are multiple choice and assess students' ability to use the words in context, as well as identify synonyms and antonyms.
Science
We will continue our study of the scientific method and will use our knowledge to complete some hands on activities. Today we made helicopters and tested our hypotheses to see how increasing mass affected the flight of the helicopters. Ask your explorer what he/she learned! The tentative date for our chapter 1 assessment is September 10.
Math
We will spend this week learning about different kinds of polygons. Many of you have already sent in a one-inch binder...THANK YOU! If you have not, please send that in as soon as possible. You should have received an e-mail from Khan Academy on Friday asking you to set up a parent account. Everyday Math will remain our primary curriculum, but we will be using Khan Academy throughout the year to reinforce current topics, practice skills that are challenging, and enrich the curriculum when students have mastered content. Students will be able to access their accounts both at school and at home. We practiced logging in on Friday and students wrote down their usernames and passwords in their planner. Because the students are under 13, Khan Academy requires parents to set up an account to monitor activity. If your child already has an account that you would prefer to use, I can add that if you send me the username and password.

Volunteer Opportunities!
This Wednesday, August 26:
1) There is a math game that I would like to have copied, laminated, and stored in baggies for the kids to play this week. This could be done any time Wednesday morning or early afternoon.
2) We will be doing an interactive map activity in Indiana History. I will get them started tomorrow, but Wednesday will involve cutting and gluing ribbon to represent parts of the map. I could use some extra hands during our Indiana History time from 10:30-11:00. If you would like to come earlier to pre-cut some of the ribbon, that may help us move more quickly during the lesson.
Also, the week of September 21st will be our first Box Tops collection. I need a volunteer to trim, sort, and count the box tops that our class collects. This can be done either at your home or at school.
If you have a full or limited background check on file and would like to help with any of these opportunities, please send me an e-mail! amyknueven@zcs.k12.in.us
