Feast of the Immaculate Conception

Yesterday was the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and the start of the Year of Mercy. Our 5th graders held leadership roles with our Mass, as they will throughout the month of December. All classes had representation as they collected pieces of "straw," each one symbolizing a good deed, to fill the manger in the church nativity scene. Father Jordan talked to the students during his homily about the role of God's mercy in our lives. Here is a video on #EncounterMercy by the Archdiocese http://cardinalsblog.adw.org/2015/12/the-jubilee-year-of-mercy/ and http://mercy.adw.org/ to learn more about the Year of Mercy.

Math Number Talks

Starting this fall, students at Saint Matthias in PreK-5th grade are working on computation skills. We know students can memorize facts, but a strong understanding of numbers and how they are related is important for higher level math work. Under the guidance of Gail Donoghue, the Director of the Academy of Catholic Educators at Notre Dame of Maryland, all our teachers are participating in small-group professional development this year.
