Feast of the Immaculate Conception

Yesterday was the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and the start of the Year of Mercy. Our 5th graders held leadership roles with our Mass, as they will throughout the month of December. All classes had representation as they collected pieces of "straw," each one symbolizing a good deed, to fill the manger in the church nativity scene. Father Jordan talked to the students during his homily about the role of God's mercy in our lives. Here is a video on #EncounterMercy by the Archdiocese and to learn more about the Year of Mercy.

Texas Roadhouse Night

Thank you to all our families and friends who attended our Family Dinner Night last night. During the evening, we had a drawing for a free dinner. Congrats to Ms. Smith, our winner! See 8th grader Simon pull the winning ticket here:

Re-Enrollment Opens

Early re-enrollment opens this week and runs from now to the end of January at the rate of $125/student. From February 1st to April 3rd (the last day of spring break), on-time re-enrollment is $150/student. Late re-enrollment starts April 4th at the rate of $200/student. You will get an email directly from TADS to complete the re-enrollment process.

Math Number Talks

Starting this fall, students at Saint Matthias in PreK-5th grade are working on computation skills. We know students can memorize facts, but a strong understanding of numbers and how they are related is important for higher level math work. Under the guidance of Gail Donoghue, the Director of the Academy of Catholic Educators at Notre Dame of Maryland, all our teachers are participating in small-group professional development this year.

Fundraising Plan

Monday night, parents and other supporters gathered to brainstorm our fundraising plan for the rest of the 2015-2016 school year. We group created a plan that was sent to Father Jordan for events of interest. Once Father has reviewed this, events with dates and timelines will be announced. Thank you for all your support of our events at Saint Matthias!

Essay and Drawing Contest Sponsored by the Sodality Union

The Committee of Junior Sodality of the Sodality Union is delighted to again this year present an Essay and Drawing Contest.

Participants are asked to answer the following question:

What can I offer in sacrifice to help the Poor and help save the Earth?

The question relates to the pledge many have taken to "Walk with Pope Francis" in service to our community.

Guidelines are posted on the website:

Essays and drawings are due by December 20, 2015.

Contest winners will be recognized on February 6, 2016 at the Sodality Union General Meeting at St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church.
