Language Arts
Welcome back! We hope you enjoyed the winter break! As we get back into the school routine, our instruction will integrate the season of winter and different kinds of weather into language arts. This month we will focus on building our comprehension of nonfiction books by identifying main ideas and important details, and how to use text features and illustrations to build our understanding.
Guided reading groups are tiered and based on reading ability. This small group opportunity provides individualized instruction based on academic needs. Skills we work on during groups include:
Phonics skills
Building CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words
Rhyming word families
Sounding out words
Applying letter/sound and word knowledge to reading and writing
Sight words
Comprehension (retelling, story elements, sequencing, inferencing)
Text features (bold print, punctuation, quotations marks, labels…)
Fluency
Math
We will use tools such as part, part, whole mats, number lines, manipulatives, and other math materials to help students develop the skills of putting together and taking away. They will manipulate tools to solve and explain mathematical problems. We will use pictures, equations, and oral explanations to help explain our mathematical reasoning.
