Building Skills for Responsive Teaching and Learning
Our theme this year is Building Skills for Responsive Teaching and Learning! We have faced an unprecedented time in education like no other. The pandemic has brought us lots of challenges and we have learned so much and grown like no other time. This year's summit will offer limited in-person opportunities with live streaming available for those joining virtual. Sessions offered will be around Culturally Responsive Teaching, Technology, Engagement, Sheltered Instruction, SEL, Language and Rigor, Google Classroom, Differentiation, Interventions, Dual Language, AVID & more...!
Classified and Licensed staff are invited to discover new ideas and resources from colleagues around the district! Participants will be able to choose up to four sessions throughout the day.

Keynote: Doug Fisher
Douglas Fisher is a professor of educational leadership at San Diego State University and a teacher leader at Health Sciences High & Middle College. He is a member of the California Reading Hall of Fame and was honored as an exemplary leader by the Conference on English Leadership.
He has published numerous articles on improving student achievement, and his books include The Purposeful Classroom: How to Structure Lessons with Learning Goals in Mind; Enhancing RTI: How to Ensure Success with Effective Classroom Instruction and Intervention; Checking for Understanding: Formative Assessment Techniques for Your Classroom; How to Create a Culture of Achievement in Your School and Classroom; and Intentional and Targeted Teaching: A Framework for Teacher Growth and Leadership.
Elementary Leadership During Session 1: Nancy Frey
Nancy Frey is a professor of educational leadership at San Diego State University. Frey also teaches classes at Health Sciences High and Middle College in San Diego.
She is a recipient of the Christa McAuliffe Award for Excellence in Teacher Education from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and the Early Career Award from the Literacy Research Association.
She has published many articles and books on literacy and instruction, including Productive Group Work: How to Engage Students, Build Teamwork, and Promote Understanding; The Formative Assessment Action Plan: Practical Steps to More Successful Teaching and Learning; and Guided Instruction: How to Develop Confident and Successful Learners.
Secondary Leadership During Session 2: Dominique Smith
Dominique Smith is the director of student services at Health Sciences High & Middle College, where he also serves as a culture builder and student advocate. He is also social worker, school administrator, mentor, national trainer for the International Institute on Restorative Practices, and member of ASCD's FIT Teaching® (Framework for Intentional and Targeted Teaching®) Cadre.
He is passionate about creating school cultures that honor students and build their confidence and competence. He is the winner of the National School Safety Award from the School Safety Advocacy Council.
Smith is the coauthor of Better Than Carrots or Sticks: Restorative Practices for Positive Classroom Management and Building Equity: Policies and Practices to Empower All Learners. He holds a master's degree in social work from the University of Southern California.
PreK-12 Virtual Summer Summit 2021
This is a completely voluntary opportunity for Licensed and Classified staff to focus on instructional practices. In-person attendants will be coming to Century High school.
