Doughboys

Dust lingers on the faces of fearless men

Their complexion looks like dough

The nickname stuck from the Mexican American War

Or was it from the excitement of fresh bread?

The origin is unknown

But everyone agrees these warriors are true heroes

Marching into France,

Down cobblestone walkways,

The echo of boots

Cut through the dead silence

American Expeditionary Forces,

Otherwise known as doughboys

Were called in to speed up the war and move it from trenches

No matter what time of day, there was a threat

Tedious trenches teeming

With fright, fear and foreign enemies, valued lives were lost

The men did their jobs

Fighting for their country

To keep our lives safe
