A Marvelous Multicultural Night!
Many of our clubs have now started and are in full swing from basketball to Somali Heritage to Girls Who Code. If you want to get your student involved in after school programs check in at our main office!
In January we will begin our mid year testing on iReady. iReady is the program we use to track student learning and it also gives students lessons at their level in reading and math. The test is important because the more accurate it is the more effective the lessons and instruction they get will be. Our grades will be testing at different times throughout January and there is no one big test day for students. Check in with your student to see what their schedule is and make sure they get plenty of sleep and healthy food when their testing window is. You can also support our student with positive talk around their effort: "Make sure you try on every question!", "Did you work hard on iReady today?", etc. instead of "Did you score high on the test?" or "Did you do well?". This praising of effort rather than proficiency is shown to build important life skills in students.
We are excited to continue to grow our programs and supports at White Center Heights Elementary please reach out if you have any ideas or want to support our students in new ways! Some pictures from Multicultural Night:

Reminders & Updates

- Need a booster seat, 3 in 1 car seat, umbrella stroller, or high chair for your student or other children? WestSide Baby has offered to provide these for free to any families that need them, please stop by the office and let us know you want one, we will put down your name and call you when they are delivered.
- Volunteers needed! If you would like to volunteer at our school to tutor students, help teachers, or help students come in to the main office to sign up to be a volunteer!
- Students will not be released for early dismissal after 3:20 pm Monday through Thursday, and 1:55 pm on Fridays.
- We started a new first grade classroom in December! This year we had more students than projected, in order to reduce class sizes in first and second grade we opened a new first grade classroom in early December. This will help support all of our first and second graders! This additional funding also allowed us to hire a floating kindergarten teacher to support across our kindergarten classes and hire more paraprofessionals.
- We have continued to diversify our staff at White Center Heights, we have hired over 9 new staff members this year and over 70% have been staff of color that represent the cultures of our student. We continue to search for community members to hire, if you know of anybody looking to work in education, send them our way! They can find our openings at https://highlinejobs.hrmplus.net/ click on "Job Openings" then type "White Center" into the location box.
New School Bus Loading/Unloading Zones on 100th St SW Starting on Jan. 13th
Based on the feedback we’ve received, White Center Heights Elementary School is testing out a new bus loading/unloading zone along 100th St SW, between 8th and 7th Ave. This change has been made in collaboration with King County (who updated the street signs) in order to accommodate additional drop-off/pick-up spaces and parking spots for families along 8th Ave SW. This change will take effect on Monday, January 13th. We will collect feedback from the school community and make any necessary improvements.
Thank you for your feedback and patience as we worked to improve parking and traffic flow around the school.
