Dyer Times
Partnering with parents to create lifelong learners
February 2, 2018 Issue 6
Dyer Families,
It is good to be back in the swing of things after returning from the holidays. Everyone seems to be settling back in nicely! Shortly after we returned from Christmas Break our students had their opportunity to compete at the UIL meet in Gainesville. I am proud to say that they did WONDERFUL! We are so proud of the hard work and determination that went in to making this a successful year at the UIL competitions!
We are currently in the home stretch of our annual chocolate fundraiser. All of the money is due to the office by February 2. If you still have some out, please send that back so that we can move forward with our prizes! This year’s prizes are very exciting! I have an i-Pad waiting on the top seller, a trip to Main Event waiting for the top 8 sellers, and quite a few other prizes to begin giving out. Thank you to all of you who have been the foundation of this fundraiser doing so well for so many years. We appreciate you so much!
In addition to the wonderful things that have already been happening, we are also looking forward to our Family Fun Night on February 20th. This is a night for parents to come to school with their students and participate in different educational stations that are run by our teachers. This year we are excited to say that the Perot Museum will also be setting up some exciting stations. These will not only be FUN, but will also give you some good ideas for supporting your child’s learning from home. Our wonderful PTO will be serving dinner for everyone in the Dyer cafeteria immediately following their monthly meeting. Please put this event on your calendar, and plan to join us for a night of fun!
While you’re here for Family Fun Night, please take a moment to check out all of the wonderful work displayed in the halls. Our students have been doing some phenomenal writing, and I would like to ask you to encourage your children to continue having fun with creative writing at home as well! If your child writes something he or she is proud of, please send them to school with it so that we can praise them from here as well!
Like always, please remember that we’re here to partner with you in your child’s education. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us. My door is always open!
Very sincerely,
Lindsey Boone

Join us for our annual Pancake Supper benefiting Krum's Special Olympics Team!
Date? February 27th
Time? 5:00-7:00 p.m.
Attendance Policy
As referenced in the 2017-18 Student Handbook. Page 21.
Arriving late or leaving early is considered a part of the day: 4 or more tardies or picking your child up before dismissal time will exempt a student from perfect attendance awards/rewards and time may be required to be made up during summer school.
Doctor and Dental Appointments: Absences for appointments with doctors, dentists, orthodontists, physical therapists, and other health care professionals will be classified as excused absences if the student returns to school on the same day as the appointment and presents a note from the health care provider stating the time of the appointment and the time the student left the doctor’s office. If the appointment is at the end of the school day and the student has been at school all day up to that time, the absence will be excused if the student brings a note from the health care provider the following day.
IMPORTANT!!
Parents please remember to keep all your information updated with the front office. There may be times when we need to get in touch with you. We need a current phone number and address for mailing.
Please Help!!
Volunteer application available online
Apply to volunteer at your child’s campus by submitting an online application. The process is easy and takes just a few minutes. Simply go to https://krumisd.quickapp.pro/ to fill out the form. You can also access to application at www.krumisd.net, select “Parents” and click on the “Volunteer” link. Remember, volunteers must submit an application every year to continue volunteering. Applicants who have questions may call (940) 482-2501 or contact their child’s campus.
REMINDER!!
If you ever need to change the way your child gets home, you MUST send a note to school or call the office BEFORE 2:30pm to ensure we are able to get the information to your child’s teacher (we WILL NOT take your child’s word on transportation changes). If you email your child’s teacher, please CC the office staff also about transportation changes. On most days the teachers are only able to check their emails on their conference periods.
Sending a note is preferably the best way to communicate with your child's teacher.

February is here bringing new games and excitement to the students of Hattie Dyer. We will begin Jump Rope for Heart February 9th. This is a special program very dear to my heart. You will receive all info for JRFH on February 8th. I want to remind you of a few things that I would like to continue to see for the remainder of the year.
Please make sure that your children are wearing the proper clothing for activities with increased movement. Shoes that tie with shoelaces are recommended above any other type of shoe. Each time that your child wears the incorrect footing, 10 points are deducted from his/her daily grade. Those dates are documented and updated weekly on Parent Portal.
I am deducting points from students that have repeated behavior issues. 10 points are deducted each time I send a student to time-out. Those dates are documented and updated weekly on Parent Portal.
If your child is recovering from an illness or injury, please send a note. If a note is not received, and your child sits out, 10 points are deducted from his/her daily grade.
3rd grade is finishing the Fitnessgram. The Fitnessgram is a standardized test that is conducted in PE. This test measures their level of being physically fit. The results are recorded and then submitted to the state. This test is not taken as a grade for PE.
Each student received an evaluation of their scores produced from the Fitnessgram program software. Each test is listed on the left side of the page with their score represented in a bar graph. See below for average scores. Average scores fall within the Healthy Zone area. Students ages 9 and under are not required to complete the PACER, according to the state, but were asked to complete the test to understand their expectations for the following year at Dodd Intermediate.
See chart below for the list of requirements for the students.
We are learning more everyday and moving very quickly. Stay active and healthy!

We are looking forward to a great new year and all the possibilities ahead. January is the time for review and we will be reviewing all our skills. We will work in all of the Google packages we have looked at so far this school year: Docs, Slides, and Drawing. Most importantly, we will work to improve our typing skills. As always, anything we do in class is on my webpage. Assignments and grading expectations are all there. Your child can work on anything at home as long as they are the one doing the work.

The 3rd grade link is www.krumisd.net/cayce/3
The first time they go to this page, make it a favorite or bookmark, so it is easy for them to return to it the next time.

* Keynotes from Music with Mrs. Lujan * kami.lujan@krumisd.net
This past month, students learned about the last instrument family, the woodwind family! Ask your 2nd or 3rd grader if they can tell you an instrument from the woodwind family, and why it belongs there!
Students in both grades learned a new melodic note to put on the music staff, and 3rd graders now know a new rhythm, sixteenth notes!
Lastly, students from both grades now know the musical terms for fast, slow AND medium! Try and quiz them to see if they remember our new vocabulary words.
Email is the best way to contact me. Feel free to do so at kami.lujan@krumisd.net
Nurse Notes from Mrs. Craddock, RN dana.craddock@krumisd.net
February celebrates National Children's Dental Health Month. A healthy mouth is important to overall general health. Decaying or infected teeth can be painful and can lead to other serious health problems. Follow these tips to maintain a healthy mouth and bright smile!
- Brush your teeth twice a day and floss between teeth regularly
- Eat a healthy diet; avoid sugary snacks and sodas
- See a dentist for regular check-ups and cleanings
Visit the American Dental Association website for more information, fun activities, and assistance in finding a dentist for your family.
Krum Dental Associates will be providing dental screenings and fluoride varnish for students on Feb. 15th 2018 with parental permission. These screenings are completed at NO CHARGE to you or your family. Dental screenings are performed by a licensed dental professional. Your child will be given their screening results to bring home. Dental screenings are NOT a complete dental examination and you are encouraged to have your child seen by a dentist at least twice a year.
In order for your child to be seen by the dentist, a consent form must be signed and returned by February 12th. Consents will be sent home in Friday folders.
Please put a change of clothes in your child’s backpack.
On a weekly, sometimes daily basis students need to change clothes during the day due to accidents or spills. Most children prefer to have their own clothes (shirt, shorts/pants, and underwear) to change into rather than use what we have here at school.
The small supply of clothes we had at the beginning of the year is about gone. If your student has borrowed a change of clothes from the office, please launder and return to school.

February Focus on Fluency
Fluency is defined as the effortless reading of text with appropriate speed, accuracy, chunking, proper expression, and prosody in order to ensure comprehension. When we talk about fluency, we don’t want hurried reading. Fluency is so important because it aides in comprehension.
- Speed: The goal is to read at an appropriate rate AND comprehend what was read.
- Accuracy: Error-free reading of text- Students read more accurately through decoding and sight-word recognition.
- Phrasing/Chunking of Text: Reading in a way that follows normal speech patterns, or in other words, not reading one word at a time.
- Proper Expression: Reading with expression, whether it be excited, sad, scared, etc.
- Prosody: The way that fluent readers bring the words to life.
How Can You Help???
- Students NEED to read every day!
- Read to your child~ Children need modeling of appropriate pausing, how a good reader builds excitement and other skills that bring words, sentences, and stories to life.
- Repeated Reading~ Research has shown that when students reread text on their independent reading level, their reading rate and fluency improves.

Pick A Number, Any Number
Ask your child to pick a number, any whole number, from 1 through 1,000. After asking ten questions, you would be able to share what number was chosen.
But how? What kind of questions do you have to ask? The competitor in me says I can do it in less than 10, so how might I do that? Can I do it with consistency?
This challenge, adapted from illuminations.nctm.org, is something that my parents and I would often engage in, but I could never figure out why they would always guess my number in ten questions or less... until I understood what they were really doing. Caution: spoiler alert ahead!
The challenge is solved using something called exponential decay. 2 to the tenth power is 1,024, so each time you ask a question, you can remove the other "half" of responses. Here is a sample:
- Is your number less than 500? Yes. Subtract 250.
- Is your number less than 250? No. Add 125.
- Is your number greater than 375? Yes. Add 62 (since half of 125 is 61.5, round to the nearest even number).
- Is your number greater than 437? No. Subtract 31.
- Is your number less than 406? No. Add 16 (same reason as step 3).
- Is your number less than 422? Yes. Subtract 8.
- Is your number less than 414? No. Add 4.
- Is your number less than 418? Yes. Subtract 2.
- Is your number less than 416? Yes. Subtract 1.
- Is your number greater than 414? Yes. Your number was 415.
This works every time! Now try it out with your child and see. If your partner is K-5, you may want to do all the guessing, but if they are older, switch roles and see if they can guess it in 10 or less!
