From the PrinciPAL
A Fabulous Week 5!
Dear Caregivers, Families, and Friends,
RMCS Students participated in a school-wide art collaboration to celebrate our school community, “Rick Marcotte Central School, where Everybody is Somebody.” Each K-5 student chose one color to use in a mini self-portrait. Once all the portraits were complete, Mrs. Lewis arranged them in rainbow order to create a mural. Together, our students painted an incredible Rainbow of Smiling Faces. I'm very impressed by our young artists, and you should be, too!
I'm excited to showcase the 4th Grade in this week's PrinciPAL report. Fourth graders are studying geology in science class and working on character studies in literacy. Grayson, an artist and author, is showcasing his first comic strip of the year in his soon-to-be weekly column, Epic A.J.! Fourth graders, YOU ROCK! That's geology, get it?
RMCS conducted our first Clear the Halls Drill on Thursday. This is one of the required safety drills by the Vermont Agency of Education. Clear the Halls means that all students stay in their classroom or the nearest room with an adult in order to keep students out of hallways, bathrooms or other common areas. Students stay in that location with an adult until the drill is complete. Classes continue during a clear the halls.
We have used elementary-appropriate language and guidance to introduce a variety of safety drills to our students. The language is consistent across all classrooms and designed to instruct students to stay calm, check in with an adult, and look and listen for directions. Part of the social story used with students and written by Amy Kelliher, Kindergarten teacher, focuses on the acronym PAL for students to remember when there is a drill alarm or announcement.
P - Pause and take a deep breath
A - find the nearest Adult
L - Look and Listen for directions from the adult
Have a wonderful weekend, and Happy October!
Best,
Lissa McDonald
