Abound Parenting- Hathaway News

Using Abound to build reading skills in small moments each day

This week’s academic vocabulary word is CONTRIBUTE. Here are 2 ways to give your child extra opportunities to hear and use the word CONTRIBUTE!

♦ If you were working in a group on a project and someone was not CONTRIBUTING to it as much as everyone else, what would you do? Is it important that everyone CONTRIBUTES to a project that you are

working on together?

♦ How do you CONTRIBUTE to the chores in your house? How do you think it makes your family feel when you CONTRIBUTE to the chores? What about when you don’t?

Remind your child that the word CONTRIBUTE means to give or do something that helps a person or a group.

How else can you build your child’s reading skills through TALK?

Try these questions taken from different TalkOn age groups this week!

♦ As soon as I saw the picture, I knew that view of the zoo was painted by you! Can we count all the rhyming words in that sentence? (4; knew, view, zoo, you)

♦ Art that doesn't look real or exactly like something in nature is called abstract art. Often abstract art includes lots of shapes and colors. Would you rather look at paintings of things you see in real life, or

abstract art? Why?

♦ Artists sometimes spend years creating enormous metal sculptures for outdoor spaces. If you had made one of these sculptures, how would you feel as movers arrived to load it in the truck? What would you be thinking about?

"Why do we have statewide standardized assessments?
Rhode Island has statewide standardized assessments in mathematics, English language arts, and science in order to meet a federal requirement and provide valuable information about how well our students, schools, districts, and state are doing. Results measure the knowledge and skills addressed in the Rhode Island Core Standards (RICS) for English Language Arts/Literacy and for Mathematics, and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and are used in the following ways:

  • The results can help you track your child’s progress over time.
  • Results give you the ability to compare your child’s school to schools across the state.
  • Districts and schools analyze their results to inform decisions they make to support teaching and learning."

You can find more information on the RIDE website.

Return to the Cafeteria - Revised

We want our students to have the complete school experience and as guidelines have been revised we would like for our students to get back to having lunch in the cafeteria. Over the next few weeks we will transition students from eating in their classrooms to eating in the cafeteria by teaching them the expectations for the cafeteria and putting in place the operations and systems that support health and safety practices.

  • Students will sit with their classroom peers.
  • Students will sit staggered and 3 feet apart for the first week. A full return to the cafeteria will begin the week of 3/21.
  • Students will be allowed to talk during lunch. (Please note that we always begin lunch with 5 minutes of silence to get students to start eating their lunches.)
  • If your child orders a school lunch, it will be delivered to them at the lunch table. At this time, students will not be walking through the lunch line.
  • Students will sanitize their hands before eating, as they do when in the classroom.

All systems for ordering breakfast and lunch will remain the same.

We will continue to be a peanut and nut free school to ensure the safety of all our students.

Hathaway Notification Form

Absent today? Going to be absent in the future? Early pick up? Need to communicate a change in pick up in the main office?

Please complete the Hathaway Notification Form.

Thank you in advance for helping us to keep things organized and safe in our Hathaway community.

Asynchronous Learning

Students who need to quarantine will be provided with asynchronous distance learning. All teachers are prepared to have daily assignments and accompanying materials available for students on a regular basis. If an entire class is asked to quarantine, synchronous learning will be available to the entire class. Materials pick up may be scheduled.

Teachers will be sharing login procedures with students and families. It is important that your child is familiar with Google Classroom and how to access the necessary lessons. This will make for an easy transition if your child is asked to quarantine.

Accessing Aspen

If you are having issues accessing Aspen, you will have to email familyportal@portsmouthschoolsri.org with your child's name, date of birth, grade level, and your name. The system administrators will be able to restore access to your account and make sure that you can login.
