CENTRE โ The Jacksonville girls basketball team never ceases to amaze coach Tres Buzan this season.
The Golden Eagles were slow out of the gate and fell behind double digits early, but rallied throughout the rest of the game and wound up beating Hokes Bluff 43-41 in the Class 4A Area 10 girls tournament Tuesday night to extend their season.
The win guarantees Jacksonville a spot in the sub-region round and sends it to face top-seeded host Cherokee County for the area championship Thursday night. The Lady Warriors got through White Plains 53-24.
โLosing eight girls off that regional final team last year, we knew we were all coming in a little young and having a lot of experience to replace,โ Buzan said. โBut Iโve watched this team grow and get better and better.
โWeโve had our ups and downs, but pulling this one out when were down big, I couldnโt be more proud of them. There were tons of obstacles that could have said hey we lose this game, but they kept fighting and found a way.
โIf you would have told me this team at the beginning of the year would go and make it to the playoffs Iโd have said I donโt know what theyโre made of. But they kept showing me we may be young, we may not be the team from last year, but they kept getting there.โ
The Golden Eagles trailed 12-2 after the first quarter, but steadily cut into the deficit and outscored the Lady Eagles 17-10 in the fourth to win.
Patience Carrโs put back of a missed 3-pointer inside 30 seconds left capped a game-long comeback that gave Jacksonville the lead 42-40. Hokes Bluffโs Kristen Shields was fouled with two seconds left. She made the first of her two free throws, missed the second and Brenna Stone was fouled on the rebound with 1.3 seconds to play.
Stone made the first in her one-and-one, missed the bonus, but Rebekah Gannaway was there for the rebound and ran out the clock.
โDefensively they were super aggressive at the start of the game,โ Buzan said. โThey jumped all over us at the gate and we didnโt handle the pressure well. Then we settled in in the second quarter and started making plays we knew we could make.โ
Jacksonville and Cherokee County will cross with Anniston and Talladega in the sub-region round.

JACKSONVILLE โ The home team wanted to put the pedal to the metal for a full 32 minutes Thursday night, refusing to take its feet off the accelerator until the final buzzer went off at the end of the game.
Jacksonville did just that, using suffocating defense that helped it get out in transition for easy buckets. It scored the gameโs first 12 points and never looked back en route to a 66-40 victory over Hokes Bluff in the semifinals of the Class 4A, Area 10 tournament.
The Golden Eagles (14-11) will now play Cherokee County for the area title Saturday. Both teams are guaranteed spots in the sub-region round of the tournament; the winner will host second-ranked Area 10 runner-up Talladega, while the loser travels to Anniston.
Jacksonville bullied Hokes Bluff (16-12) for most of the evening, coming up with eight steals and forcing the non-golden Eagles into 17 turnovers. Jacksonville did the majority of its damage on the offensive glass, outrebounding Hokes Bluff 41-31 for the game and hauling in a staggering 22 offensive boards for 13 second-chance points.
Junior Donavon McCain and sophomore Omarion Adams pulled down five offensive rebounds apiece, with McCain coming away with a first half double-double and finishing with 12 points and 13 rebounds on the night. Adams finished one rebound shy of a double-double himself, matching McCainโs 12 points.
โI just wanted to bring the energy,โ said McCain. โThatโs just who we are. We like to bring the energy, crash the boards, and keep it that way throughout the game.โ
โWhen that guy decides heโs going to play, itโs hard to stop him,โ Jacksonville head coach Cordell Hunt said of McCain. โI feel like he played like a man tonight, like I know that he can play every night. Sometimes I donโt get that from him, but he played real hard tonight.โ
The Golden Eagles were never seriously challenged, but a pair of 3-pointers by Hokes Bluff senior Donovan Greaves late in the first half cut their lead to 33-16 at halftime. Greaves was the lone bright spot for Hokes Bluff, pouring in 23 points on 9-of-20 shooting from the floor. The other Eagles shot just 33 percent from the field, struggling to find easy looks against Jacksonvilleโs relentless pressure.
Even with a 17-point edge, Hunt preached in the locker room that the second half was a brand new game, and that his team should play like the score is tied. He wanted to avoid a second-half snooze that allowed Hokes Bluff to crawl back into the game, hoping to leave no doubt by the time the buzzer sounded.
EARLY SIGNING DAY
Congratulations to both of these fine young men and their families.

Agriscience NCCER Review
Mr. Harold Lipscomb and the JHS Career Tech Agriscience program recently completed a state department NCCER review. Michael Hutto, Education Specialist for Agriscience at the Alabama Department of Education, evaluated the Agriscience program on eight standards: planning, instructors, facilities, industry relations, curriculum, students, safety, and leadership. We are proud to say that the program was found to be 100% in compliance. A big thank you to Mr. Lipscomb and Mr. Whaley for your hard work and for everything you do each day for our students.
Share a POSITIVE story.
I am looking for POSITIVE stories to share, good things that are happening in our schools/district. These positive stories can come from Staffulty (Faculty and Staff), Parents, community members, or students. These POSITIVE stories can be about a classroom activity, extracurricular activity, community service, kudos to businesses or parents that volunteer/donate to our schools/district or other activity that validates outstanding performance /opportunities for our students/staffulty.
I try to make it to the schools on a daily basis to support and encourage what is happening there. However, I need more eyes, and ears to help me share the specific stories that are causing our district/schools/classes to grow and be regarded among the best in Alabama. Who is willing to share with me to help SPREAD THE POSITIVE Stories? Pics and videos are all welcome.
I have been trying to send a "SMORE" each week to all of our employees as well as on FB . POSITIVE REFERRALS for employees will continue as we have AWESOME people as teammates in the DAILY endeavor to CHANGE LIVES AND IMPACT FUTURES. Thank you.
