Sliding Ceremony
This Wednesday, our East Pirates will participate in our first ever Sliding Ceremony! During their Specials time, each student will be randomly assigned to a "House" and will slide down our slide in the library for the first time. Students moving to East from Central Elementary will have the option to keep their House assignment from last year, should they elect to do so. Once a student is assigned to a house at East, they will always be part of that House!
The Houses for East Elementary are as follows:
- Gamma (Red)
- Sigma (Orange)
- Delta (Green)
- Omega (Blue)
- Theta (Purple)
The House System in place at East Elementary will play an important role in connecting students across classrooms and grade levels.
The tradition of "house systems" originated in boarding schools in England. Each school is divided into 'houses' and each student is assigned to a 'house' upon enrollment in the school. In the public school setting, Houses are typically used to provided an additional venue for connection, aside from the homeroom connection.
At Lubbock-Cooper East Elementary, students will be allowed to sit in their House during lunch. This helps our students expand their circle of connection beyond the traditional homeroom grouping. Additionally, the lunch schedule at East is such that older students may elect to mentor younger Pirates in their same House and assist them during their lunch time.
Each 4.5 weeks, students will be encouraged to come dressed in their House color. These dates will be communicated to parents ahead of time. Our first House Color Day will be Friday, September 14. Students are never required to dress in their color or to purchase any accessories or additional clothing items. Students will stay in their same House for their entire period of enrollment at East, so if you do elect to purchase an item for your child, you might buy a size up to ensure they can get more use out of the item! For example, a student in first grade may be assigned to the Theta (purple) House. They will remain in the Theta (purple) House for the 5 years they attend school at East Elementary.
At the end of each grading period (each 9 weeks), we will also have a "House Party" to celebrate the many successes of the grading period. Students will be invited to dress up on these days if they choose to do so. Of course, our staff members will also be dressed up in their house color to celebrate with our students, too!
We have found that the House System is another great way to add an element of fun to our campus, as well as provide another opportunity to foster strong relationships among students and staff members. We look forward to creating a fun culture here at East and believe our House System will be a key to the connections we make!
Please be on the lookout for a bracelet on your child when they come home from school on Wednesday! This bracelet will help you identify the House color your child has been assigned to. I hope your child will also be excited to tell you about their very first Sliding Ceremony and the excitement in the building!
Every day is a GREAT day to be an East Pirate!

Mrs. Baird's Teacher on the Rise
Each year, Mrs. Baird's recognizes teachers across the South Plains who have a tremendous impact on student learning! Students can nominate an educator who is changing their life through education.
Mrs. Baird's recognizes three teachers monthly and gifts those educators with a prize package worth $200 and recognizes the nominating student with a $50 Visa gift card, too!
If your child would like to nominate an educator who is making a difference in their life, you can assist them in submitting the nomination by visiting: http://www.mrsbteacher.com/.
We fully believe we are blessed with the very best educators here at East Elementary and hope that you will help us recognize them!
Morning Arrival & Waiting Procedures
Parents who would like to wait with their children in the morning are invited to wait in the Discovery Center or in the cafeteria. Children who are unaccompanied by parents or guardians are asked to wait in the cafeteria with our staff members.
Thank you for helping us make our morning transitions smooth! Our teachers love to create welcoming and warm environments for our students each day and giving them the time to do so is what makes the magic happen!
Life Is Better Connected!
Part of establishing our East Elementary family is connecting beyond the walls of the school building. There are several ways we work to help foster connections, including a campus Facebook group, newsletters like this one, and other ways, too!

Water Bottle Fillers
Your child is encouraged to bring a plastic or metal water bottle to school each day. Students can easily use the stations to fill their bottles up and stay hydrated throughout the school day.
LCISD Clear Bag Policy
In order to maintain a safe, monitored environment for students, fans, and guests of our district, Lubbock-Cooper ISD is implementing a clear bag policy for all UIL-sanctioned athletic events hosted by Lubbock-Cooper schools. This is in effect with the start of the 2018-19 fall athletic season.
Attendees of UIL-sanctioned athletic events will be able to carry the following style bag, package, or container into a Lubbock-Cooper ISD venue:
- Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC
- One-gallon clear plastic freezer bags (Ziploc or similar)
There is no limit to the number of clear bags an attendee may bring into the venue.
Prohibited bags include, but are not limited to: purses/clutch bags, briefcases, backpacks, fanny packs, cinch bags, luggage of any kind, computer bags, binocular cases, and camera bags. Binoculars and cameras worn around the neck or carried in the hands without the case are permitted. Blankets and seat cushions/seatbacks carried in the hands or over the shoulder are permitted.
Outside food or drink is prohibited inside all Lubbock-Cooper ISD athletic venues. Attendees attempting to bring outside food or drink into a Lubbock-Cooper athletic venue will be asked to dispose of prohibited items upon entering.
Thank you for your cooperation!
