Garden City Library Update
February 2018
Family Voting is Open for Mock Caldecott
The American Library Association (ALA) usually awards its Caldecott Medal in January to the artist of "the most distinguished American picture book for children." This year, the ALA conference is later than usual, so we still don't know the winner yet. Will it be one of the books on the Garden City Mock Caldecott list?
First- and second-graders are listening to and discussing a slew of books, and we will be voting on the finalists that make it through our "primaries."
Families may vote from the full list here.

Getting Out the RICBA Vote
Students who read 3 or more nominated books may vote the week after February vacation. I'm aiming to cover a few of the shorter nominees during library classes. As of 1/31, we had 27 qualified voters; more than half are in Mrs. Hill's class. Go Room 7!
Students who read 5 or more qualify to participate in our inaugural Rooster Games, which will feature multiple rounds of gameshow-style activities that test kids' knowledge of the RICBA nominees. It will take place at the Central Branch of the Cranston Public Library on Wednesday, April 11, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. As of 1/31, we have 7 team members. I will be contacting parents of kids who qualify with the details.
What We're Covering
I'm working on getting all of my lessons and resources online via the LibGuide platform. I also post photos of students and their work on our blog. Here's what we're currently learning about:
- PreK - Seasons and animals
- K - Fiction v. nonfiction
- 1 and 2 - Mock Caldecott
- 3 - Placing holds on books
- 4 - Plagiarism and paraphrasing
- 5 - Advertising
NOTE: The links above now actually really point to GC pages. Sorry for the wrong links before ... it's not easy running two libraries!
