Glenealy School Newsletter
12th June 2019
Message from Brenda
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
It’s been another exciting week at Glenealy School with a focus on environmental issues (Earth Action). Throughout the week classes have been exploring and raising awareness of issues that affect us all. These issues have included sustainability, an appreciation of nature and the earth and caring for our oceans. We hope that our students will take positive action and make small changes that will have a big impact, not just for this week but ongoing into their futures.
On Monday students brought in tetra paks for recycling, thank you to everyone who had saved cleaned and flattened their used tetra paks. We managed to collect approximately 750 tetra paks adding up to 26 kgs which will now be recycled and will not be making their way to landfills in Hong Kong.
Today we are wearing green or blue to highlight World Oceans Day and there are more events planned throughout the week. Don’t forget the Green Summer Bake Sale on Friday!
On Tuesday we had our very musical morning with wonderful performances by our Year 2s on recorder and our Year 3s on violins. This was followed after the snack break by a unique opportunity and a very special treat for our students as we had our very own live show performed by the rock band Transition.
Transition are a three piece British rock band creating music that touches the soul - a fusion of Eastern and Western musical influence! Their roots are in Bristol, U.K, but they combine this rock foundation with Asian rhythm and melody, producing music that inspires audiences from both sides of the globe.
The atmosphere was electric in The Centre, particularly when the students joined in the singing of the Transitions most famous hit ‘Dui bu Qi, Wo de Zhong Wen bu Hao’ (Sorry My Chinese isnʼt so good). The band themselves were wonderful role models and they engaged brilliantly with the students. They truly demonstrated that with an open mind, perseverance and practice, we can all learn a great deal about other cultures and languages.
Kind regards
Brenda.

School Sports
Over the past few weeks, Glenealy School has been very well represented at the HKPSSA Cricket Championships, Under-10's Rounders Championships, and the ESF Aquathon. I would like to congratulate all the students who have joined our School Sports clubs this year and also thank our whole school community for your ongoing support.
I am very much looking forward to many more sporting opportunities in the next academic year.
UNICEF Kid Power
UNICEF has given us until the end of this week to complete the final syncing of our bands to ensure that all steps are counted. After this, UNICEF will share with us the final data on the number of steps and total lives saved through this amazing initiative.
All students involved have been heavily invested in making a positive difference to their own physical activity levels and to the lives of those suffering from severe acute malnutrition around the world. Details will be shared about what students can do with their bands once this school-based pilot has ended. Thank you for your ongoing support with this programme.
Warm regards,
Andy Pattison
Physical Education Coordinator

Tetra Pak Recycling
Amazing News!
At the tetra pak recycling drive we racked up about 26 kilos of tetra paks altogether. We got approximately 16 kilos with the white lined tetra paks and just over 10 kilos with the silver lined tetra paks. Thanks to the parents and students that helped with the collection booth and to all the families who were collecting the tetra paks - great job everyone!
Our next collection will be at the start of next term, so please keep collecting at home. Don’t forget to cut open, wash and dry your tetra paks ready for the next collection.
We have made a movie to help you prepare your tetra paks for recycling.
