Message to Students, Parents and Community about Distance Learning

Hello Sweetwater Union High School District Students, Parents and Community,

As we prepare for the launch of our Distance Learning programs, we want to share with you the resources available for parents and students. As a reminder, the distance learning websites are available for all and continue to be updated. This week we also published a one-page set of guidelines for distance learning for all to follow. Finally, we are including a much more comprehensive guide to distance learning. You can find that document as an attachment to this email.

For our Senior students (12th graders), we sent out a survey this week to ask about graduation and looking for both parent and student input on this. You can see the link to the survey here. We ask that parents and student log in together, as we require a Sweetwater District email address for completion. Once logged in, you can answer in either the ‘parent’ or ‘student’ section. Please share this as we’d like to hear from as many students and parents as possible.

Latest information for parents and guardians can be found HERE

Karlie Kloss, Sal Khan and Special Guests Introduce the 2020 Breakthrough Junior Challenge

Challenge

You get it. You’ve grasped an important scientific theory, concept or principle. Now can you share your insight? An inventive video can get across complex material that would take pages of text to communicate.

To take part in the Breakthrough Junior Challenge (the “Challenge”), create a short video (3:00 minutes max) to explain a big idea in one of these fields: Physics, Mathematics, Life Sciences, COVID-19.

Your film can take any form you like: animation, talking head, documentary, dramatic reconstruction, whatever. It’s worth keeping in mind that video is a dynamic visual medium – using diagrams, simulations, physical demonstrations etc. is a lot more effective than standing in front of a blackboard talking.

Learn to Code (program) a virtual ROBOT

Meet "VEXcode" Drag > Drop > Drive > with VEXcode VR

VEXcode VR lets you code a virtual robot using a block-based coding environment powered by Scratch Blocks. VEXcode VR is based on VEXcode, the same programming environment used by VEX 123, GO, IQ and V5 robots.

  • Web Based: No software installations required. VEXcode VR works in all major desktop and tablet browsers.
  • Virtual Robots: Choose your pre-built virtual robot. Use drivetrains to navigate. Use sensors to help solve mazes. Use pen features on the art canvas to code a creative drawing. Use the new electromagnet to interact with game objects in challenges.
  • Virtual Playgrounds: Choose from different virtual 3D playgrounds to take advantage of the virtual robot’s features. Control your point of view as the robot runs your code. Visualize data on the playgrounds' dashboard. Playgrounds include grid worlds, art canvases, and walled mazes. There are many more Virtual Playgrounds to come!
  • Challenges and activities: Education experts have created approachable activities that can be easily implemented.
