What is QSSSA?
- Q: The teacher asks a question.
- S: The students give the teacher a response (determined by the teacher) when they are ready to answer.
- S: The teacher provides a sentence stem to frame structure language.
- S: Students are asked to share their responses with one or more peers.
- A: The teacher assesses the quality of discussion by selecting a few students to share their answers with the whole class.

What is a Roving Paragraph?
- The teacher will ask students a question about something they have been studying.
- Give the students an opportunity to discuss their thoughts with a partner or in a small group.
- Provide students with a sentence stem to help frame their language.
- Ask students to write at least one sentence using the sentence stem.
- Using the transition, "In addition...." Allow students to partner with another student. During this time the students will share the sentence they wrote with each other. The student can either take their partner's sentence or create a new sentence of their own based on what their partner shared. {At this point each student should have 2 sentences}
- Using the transition, "Also, ...." have students switch partners again. {At this point each student should have 3 sentences}
- Using the transition, "Finally...." students will return to their seat and write their own summarizing sentence. {At this point each student should have 4 sentences}
