Getting Started with Canvas
Many educators are new to the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). Here are some tips and best practices that seem to be most helpful for new users:
- Basic Navigation - In this video, you will learn about navigating through Canvas and managing your dashboard and sidebar.
- Courses - these are loaded from the Student Information System (SIS) import. As a teacher, you are enrolled in all courses. To learn more about what you can do with Canvas Courses, please visit the Courses and Section area of the Canvas Instructor Guide.
- Dashboard - The Card View Dashboard displays course cards for all your favorite courses. To learn more about how you can quickly access courses you need, please visit this Canvas support article. Here is a brief screencast showing this in action.
Recommended Actions:
- Sandbox - create a sandbox course, enroll as a teacher and play! Here is a screencast to show you how.
- Dashboard - Use the favorite option to customize the dashboard.
- Add Modules - Modules are used to organize course content by weeks, units, or whatever organizational structure works for your course. To learn more, please visit this Canvas support article.
- Course Content - Once you have modules in your course, you can add content to the modules like: Assignments, Quiz/assessments, Files, Pages, Discussions and more. To learn more, please visit this Canvas support article.
Canvas has an extensive Video Library and Instructor Guide with excellent resources to help users make sense of the many features available in the LMS.
Recommended Action:
- Modules & Content - using the sandbox course you created previously OR in a course you are using this fall, try adding a module to help you organize content by week or topic. In addition, try adding content to the module such as a page or assignment.
Browsing Accelerate Education Content
Teachers can browse the Accelerate education content library to get an idea of the modules, resources, assignments they can "lean on" this fall with students. To get started navigate to: https://canvas.gennet.us/search/all_courses/. From here you can search by key word or use the next/previous button.
Click on ANY course tile, and you will be able to browse the course as a user, see the modules, etc.
You can view a screencast that walks a user through this here.
Canvas Content Manager (CCM)
Teachers can now load Accelerate content directly in to a course through a custom built tool called the Canvas Content Manager (CCM). The content, mentioned above, might be something you are leveraging for face-to-face or virtual instruction. In order to get started, please watch this screencast that walks through how to (A) load specific items from Accelerate and (B) load an entire course.
FAQs:
- Q: Can I load content from a different grade level (or subject)?
- A: YES
- Q: How long does it take to load content?
- A: It can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. Once you queue the job, you can close the tab, walk away and the job will complete in the background.
- Q: Why am I getting an error when I access the CCM page?
- A: It seems like this is a browser cache issue - please clear your cache and try again. If you need help with clearing your browser cache, please visit this article by PCMag.
- Q: Why do I have to click on Admin to see this feature?
- A: Each user in Canvas is provided features based on their district role. For example, teachers are added as admins with access to people, courses and the CCM. Building principals and Points of Contact are given additional features.
